Being out of the power seen for some time, I am wondering how common it is
to have a fight computer instrument that can calculate your current
position, altitude, airspeed, wind direction/speed and distance to nearest
landing spot. Obviously calibrated to your aircrafts fpm sink rate in calm
air with the power out and propeller in flat pitch.

Is this something that is common in most units or not...if anyone knows of
some units with this capability, I would like to do some research.

John,
I have had instruments that fought back (Spellcheck, table 2!) at times!
Seriously though, I carry a Garmin GPS296 with me (I don't own, I
rent... Sad ) and it does what you say fairly well. If there's an issue
(and haven't been keeping track of my own position like a good little
boy) I just hit "Direct To", then "Nearest" and a list of the nearest
airports appears.. pick one and hit "Enter" and it guides you to it and
provides any frequencies you might need. (You enter your aircraft info
in the setup page of the unit)

I bought it as a gift for myself a few months after passing my
private certification. Updates aren't cheap, but I only update it every
6 months (offset 3 months from the sectional updates), and of course it
has nifty terrain and obstacle clearance information...

The only thing I hate about it are all the "You will die if you use
this unit!" warning screens... There are FOUR of them, and you have to
page through each screen to get rid of them. And there's this little
issue of Automotive mode and the compass (2 small column mode)... It has
a nasty habit of resetting the unit if you are on that page for more
than 15 minutes... Then you get to go through the warning screens
again! (Please, GARMIN, I'll sign my life away, just get rid of those
warning screens!!!!!!)

Okay, a bit off the deep end....

Hi John,
On the cheaper side of the stuff available, have a look at the "Anywhere
Map" program www.controlvision.com it has a simple scaled circle or "safety
cone" depicting your possible glide range depending upon certain parameters
entered.
I had this loaded on an ipaq and it was partly re-assuring at night as a
back-up and helped to make decisions and modify your intended route and
altitude selection based on safety zone and landing area options.
I'm sure there are better and more sophisticated capabilities out there but
this was a good option for the budget conscious.

John,
The Anywhere Map software had/has a function very similar to what you
mention. If I remember correctly it would project a ring around your
position showing how far you could glide given present altitude and
performance parameters of the aircraft. This runs on an palm size computer.
I haven't played with one for a few years so anyone with more current info
please feel free to add your $.02. I think Sportys has a complete package
in their catalog, price somewhere north of a grand.

you can check out their site at www.anywheremaps.com

Don't buy any of this software too early, it all keeps changing.  They are utilizing the Motion companies tablet PC's.  Destination Direct uses the same tablet, but DD is currently offline, as the company was just bought out!!!  ( i use this software for planning, before all the free versions came out.)  They also offered a GPS sensor... and many other bells and whistles if you chose to take your laptop or tablet flying.

You can buy a tablet and install many software programs.... the weak point is the lack of integration, as in the moving map will show you airport frequencies, but are not designed to send them into the COM standby memory like a Garmin 430+ does.    But you can own one for FAR less then the integrated systems, and have a computer too.  Many stand alone systems will allow you to buy the XM satalite USB receiver and other peripheries...

I recently saw a 2 seat experimental with a laptop in the luggage area, hard wired for power, with the lid closed , USB GPS antenna and an auxiliary touch screen moving map display mounted in the front.... with weather, etc..   total cost, under $2000.   and all the power of a complete computer....  If the lap top dies, throw it out a new one can be had cheap now.

Steve
