Yeah, where is everybody? Nobody has anything to say?

I guess after the last political discussion, everyone hopped in their

I’ll chime in with a report. My new engines are complete, have been test run with about 1.5 hours on each engine, and will ship out today from Omaha, NE for Salinas, CA. I am sure it will take the better part of a month to get them back on the airplane and ready to fly. I am installing a JPI EDM-760 engine analyzer as well. Can’t wait to have my wonderful Commander back home and flying. Have a great holiday everyone..!!

Ha! A Twingle! That one will certainly end up in the permanent Aviation
Lexicon. Well done!

Perhaps if you feed the hamsters some higher calorie foods, they'll run
faster and the props will turn harder?

Randy, that's great news. I'm excited that you'll be back in the air
soon. So who is in Omaha? Is it Columbia? I've heard they have more
IGSO-540 experience than anyone in the world.

I know you'll love your JPI, and on engines as delicate as yours,
there's a strong chance that the JPI will add great life to your
engines, or at the very least, give you plenty of warning so that you
don't have another expensive catastrophe.

Cheers,

/John

Hey John,
I believe Columbia is in PA. Central Cylinder Service built my engines in
Omaha. They are excellent, and have acquired most of the inventory from
Lycoming for geared engines, so have a good supply of parts. They do all of
the Commanders operated by Suburban Air Freight, most of which are IGSO
540's. I have to take exception to your characterizing my engines as
"delicate". Super-charged engines that growl and put out 380 HP per side
are not "delicate". More like fire breathing monsters. They just take a
fine touch. I always like to think that "too much power is just about
right".

Hamsters!
I like that.
Maybe Ill put a tiger in each tank to keep the rodents running. An old Esso
petrol ad PUT A TIGER IN YOUR TANK. Don't know if you had it in the States.

Pleased to report that the well traveled, lost, sold, don't know, fuel tanks
are actually in OZ and will be in my grubby paws soon. Now I have no more
plausible excuses for not finishing the 680E. saw something a while back
about a 680 in Germany that was named Donder Vogel (Thunder Bird). Seems
that as I am giving all my birds names Twingle,Swamp Rat,WIGUIWTBAC (when I
grow up I want to be a commander)Super Cub, Thunder Bird would be good
considering the fine green qualities that 680's have. Quiet, fuel efficient
and generally environmentally friendly.

LOL, nice, Richard. My Commander is also quiet, efficient and
environmentally friendly. Compared to the space shuttle. Oh, and
compared to the space shuttle, mine has low mileage on it too.

Glad to hear your fuel cells made the long trip.

/J

PS: We actually did have the "Put a Tiger in Your Tank" ads here in the
US, but I can't remember if it was Esso or another company (Sunoco?
Texaco?).

Randy,

Perhaps "delicate" was the wrong word. They absolutely are fire
breathing monsters. I guess I meant that the pilot must have a deft
touch, or at least not be as ham-fisted as us direct-drive guys. I think
I would be pretty nervous, managing my first descent & approach in an
IGSO-540-powered airplane if someone gave me one.

I didn't realize that there were freight companies still operating the
IGSO-540's. I was under the impression that parts were dwindling and
replacements of any kind are getting hard to come by. I sort of imagined
that the IGSO-series engines would be gone within the next 10-15 years
(I sure hope that DOESN'T happen!).

I agree with your "too much power" comment. I just saw a Military
Channel special on the McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom. They stated that
it is the heaviest fighter the US has ever produced. One of the
engineers who was interviewed stated that "the F-4 is proof that with
enough thrust, you can make anything fly." That's something that my
seniors have been telling me for years, and it gave me a good laugh to
see it on TV.

/J

PS: On the F-4, they pointed out its vicious & predatory appearance,
with the cantilevered wingtips & drooping horizontal stabilizers, and
mentioned that those were both band-aids on an aerodynamically miserable
airframe. The things you learn, 40 years past when it really matters....
