HC-SL-61-272
Nov 14/07
1. Planning Information
A. Effectivity
(1) Twin Commander 500 aircraft with a Hartzell HC-A2(X,V,MV)K-2( ) steel hub
propeller installed are affected by this Service Letter.
NOTE: A Hartzell aluminum hub compact propeller is already approved for
installation on the Twin Commander 500A, B, S, and U. The Twin
Commander 500A, B, S, and U are not affected by this Service
Letter.
B. Reason
(1) Hartzell X and V shank propellers are subject to the repetitive inspection
requirements of Hartzell Service Bulletin HC-SB-61-217 and FAA Airworthiness
Directive AD 97-18-02.
(2) In 1998, Hartzell made a design improvement to the existing V shank propellers
that are identified as MV propellers.
(3) There have been several occurrences of clamp cracks found on the MV series
propellers. Hartzell issued Alert Service Bulletin HC-ASB-61-292 to require an
initial and repetitive visual inspection of the clamps.
(4) Propeller model HC-C3YR-2UF/FC8468A-6R has been approved for
installation on the Twin Commander 500 aircraft by a Supplemental Type
Certificate, STC SA01792SE issued to Hartzell Propeller Inc. This propeller
model is not affected by Hartzell Alert Service Bulletin HC-ASB-61-292.
(a) The engine crankshaft counterweights and rollers for dynamic compatibility
with the propeller must be changed. The counterweights and rollers
required are not supplied by Hartzell. Instructions to change the engine
crankshaft counterweights and rollers are provided in Installation Report
AC500. Hartzell will supply this report with the STC documentation.
(5) Installation of the HC-C3YR-2UF/FC8468A-6R is terminating action for the
inspections required in Hartzell Alert Service Bulletin HC-ASB-61-292 and FAA
Airworthiness Directive AD 97-18-02.
