Does anybody have experience on installing a Lycoming 0-235 in a KF mod III? I know of one in a IV mod on floats. I have a Mod III set up for a 912. I don't have a 912 engine and was planning on putting in a 582, but would rather have a 4 stroke without a gear reduction.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> You might consider the Jab. 2200. Good engine, four stroke, air cooled and 2000 hrs TBO. 0-235 probably a wee bit heavy.

I'll second that suggestion....only one carb to mess with, no coolant
problems, no gearbox whine...I've got 450 hours on mine with only
minor "growing pains."

How about an 80 HP AeroVee? The Sonex uses that engine and it seems to be well proven for aircraft. The cost new is only $ 6500. Not sure the installed weight vs a 912 but the engine itself with electric starter and alternator (less the exhaust and oil) is only 158 LBS. The spec on the 912 is 125 LBS. From the Lycoming internet site I get the 0-235 weight at 243 IBS. That in my opinion is simply too much weight up front for a Kitfox. The plane will not handle as it was intended. You see the odd 0-200 Powered Kitfox (that engine is about 200 LBS), but I think the weight is the factor with the 235 series.
Anyone ever hear of an AeroVee in a Kitox?

Does that include coolant and radiator? The Jab 2200 is spec'd at
132...you provide your own "coolant" : ) Seriously, I've never
weighed my engine, but it's hard to see how the 912 could be any
lighter, ready to fly.

No coolant or radiator. That 125 lbs for the 912 was right from the spec sheet. Add the exhaust and oil and it is going to be at least as heavy as the Jab if not more.

Gary, Thanks for the reply. The 0-235 is just too heavy for the mod III kitfox from what I gather. I have a good 100 hr 582 Rotax firewall forward, so that will be the engine I use. It's the size engine the plane was originally designed for.

Lynn, Thanks, From the advice I've gotten, the 0-235 is too heavy for the kitfox III. I'm going with the 582 I have and probably sell the 912 mount that came with the plane. Pat Reilly
