As some of you know, I am contemplating using my Harbor Freight trailer to move my fuselage from home to the airport. The trailer is Model 90154, bed is 4' wide by 8' long. It has 480-12 tires, 12" 4 lug wheels.

Since the trailer is so light, I want to load it to capacity with sand bags to make the ride a little smoother.

The manual says that the Maximum Weight Capacity is 1,450 Lbs., and the Trailer Weight is 266 Lbs.

So, can I carry 1,450 lbs; or 1,450 less 266 (1,184 lbs.)?

I'm sure I can't get an "official" answer on New Year's Day, so what do you guys think?

The tag on the tongue of the trailer will state the GVW (or GVWR)
which is the max weight including the trailer. However, I would
load the airplane and add sand bags until I could jump on the bed of
the trailer and feel it spring up and down without bottoming out the
springs. Should be about perfect.

James,

That's just what I needed to know. The tag on the trailer tongue lists GVWR and GAVW as 1,450 Lb.

Since I don't know what my fuselage weighs, your "bounce" method is what I'll use.

Thanks again - Jay

See pix for a suggestion!

I successfully pulled this close to 700+/- miles at freeway speeds -- 75+/-
across Nevada.

Did slow down for the bad winds that were encountered!

For the youngsters here, condoms are not a guarantee against sexually transmitted diseases. Abstinance is the only truly safe option.

Gig, Andy and Amy;
Amazing uses!
I have forwarded your suggestions to Saran Wrap for consideration and possible implementation!

Hey, Larry. Lighten up a little. It's only temporary. If you need solutions to problems, please let us know what they are. We'll help if possible. These "other things" are just filler for when things get too slow. Honest.

Hey Jay:

If you haven't already purchased your trailer, consider your local EAA chapter. Our chapter in Omaha (EAA chapter 80) has a trailer that is used quite often. We keep it out at the hangar and it has hauled three projects recently that have flown for the first time. There are several other members getting close that have inquired about using the trailer.

If your local chapter does not have a trailer, maybe you could talk them into buying one. It is a great investment for the chapter since it gets used often. Here's a picture of ours that I used in May to move my airplane out to the airport:

http://www.cooknwithgas.com/Finishing/5_5_07_Moving1.JPG

I'd offer to lend it to you but I made the drive from Dallas to Omaha a few weeks ago and I don't recommend it.

Take care,

Scott Laughlin

Scott,

That trailer looks ideal. I just couldn't find one like it. I wound up renting a 24' straight frame trailer with a hydraulic loft gate. We had th squeeze the main gear about 3" with a ratchet strap to get both wheels on the lift gate. The photo is not a great one, but it got a little too busy to be taking photos. Made the 35 mile trip in 1 hr., 20 min., with no damage.

Thanks, Jay
