Kolbs on floats

Kolb guys,

Well, I'm back...from my vacation to "nice places to retire to". (Missouri). Mighty nice looking state. I found an area that really caught my attention. It has a big lake (Lake of the Ozarks).

The problem is, I hadn't seriously ever considered putting floats on my MkIII before. But, living there, I think I really should (want to!!) (Also, the acreage I'm thinking of buying and building a house on is 1500' from the local airport (H21).

1. Is it a lot of work to install floats on a Kolb MkIII? (Amphibs would be nice, but what do they cost?)

2. How can you get training to fly a Kolb MkIII on floats?

3. Has anyone ever unfolded the wings once they are on the boat ramp, and backed the trailer into the water to unload the plane? (Like you would do loading and unloading a boat)

4. Has anyone ever made their own floats? Is that even worth it?

5. Since I would have only a couple miles to get to a boat ramp, has anyone ever built a jig to carry the folded main wings...and left the horizontal stabilizer in flight position?

If you have any experience in these matters, I'd appreciate your input.

No   However Amphibs are costly and Heavy

Depends on your skills and desire to build things

Kolb's have the best folding tail in the industry. Fold the plane as normal

If you have any experience in these matters, I'd appreciate your input.

I built a set of all. floats  ellery has a set of plans for them 950,s but float flying is one of the most dangerus kind of flying , just try to get insurance mal

SteveApparently the stats have the ins. boys scared. Liability rates are nearly twice the landplane ones. They also lump flying boats with floatplanes, tho the boats are MUCH safer. Pilots seem to bash up seaplanes; a hard landing  breaks the crossover strut & the float goes up against the wing. Not good!

I personally think floats are easier than  wheels.

I see you found GOD's country. I use to live in Mo., over by Joplin until I coun't afford to farm any more. I had 5 airstrip on 1800 ac, from 1000' to 3/4's of a mi. long, all on grass. In the 70's & 80's there was several of us that flew UL's and GA and would hold a week end fly-in once a month. There are some of the best people you will ever meet living in Mo.
I have a Mark3/912 also and wanted information on floats. I talked to the factory and they was of no help or interested in helping. I did see a Mark 3 on e-bay with floats by a dealer in Mich. The plane looked good and they had done a great job mounting them. I found a pair of almost new floats with retractable wheels for $2500 when I was going to put a set on mine. The reg's at that time said you could not have retractable gear on a ELSA so I didn't get them. Now the reg's have changed and the floats are gone.
If you have a clear path to the ramp I don't see any problem hauling with the wings in place or a trailer with a removable up right brace and saddle to set the wings for that short of a trip.
