Anybody had any experience with buying a plane from someone whe bought it from another party who bought it from some other party. He has a bill of sale from the person he bought it from and I believe a copy of the previous bill of sale.

How could I buy this plane while protecting myself?

N number check says: "This aircraft's registration status may not be suitable for operation."

I'd pass on that one. The seller should have the FAA registration, form 8050-3, in his/her name as well as the aircraft's original Airworthiness Certificate (form 8130-7. Operating Limitations, W&B documentation, and an Equipment List should also be there but aren't as critical as the first two. Without the Registration and AW cert you aren't legal.

Is there no way to make an airplane legal after the fact?

Pete, That N number status may just mean that one of the buyers did not get the airplane registered in their name or the registration process has not been completed yet. I have seen that status show up on several planes I checked on that had just been purchased and the registration was not complete yet.

I would put the onus on the current seller to get the paperwork straightened out and produce a registration in their name before handing over any cash.

Also Recommend a records search for liens. Can be done by AOPA, and other
firms at OKC.

Tom,
Are we talking about a flying aircraft or a kit that someone was premature
getting an "N" number for? I'm trying to keep up. Jeff Classic IV CMH

Tom,

This is a licensed Kitfox. It's been through a few owners. I think today I
traced the ownership back to the last owner the FAA knows about. I think
I'll be able to get a clear title.

Thanks for all the help from those who commented.

Pete
