We want to fit a supplementary ADC oil filter to a Yak and would be grateful for views as to where it should be placed in the oil system. Our thinking is the return line from the oil cooler. The aircraft will only be used in hot climates.
Grateful for your views.

Richard,
You are 100% correct. It must be installed in the return line from the oil cooler to the oil tank. Although I personally do not have one installed, everyone that has installed the ADC filter seems to be quite pleased with it.

Good afternoon Richard,
We've installed many ADC oil filters. I would recommend using the spin
on filter rather than the "flat-pack".
There seems to be less mess involved with the spin-on. We install them
on RH side of the engine mount and plumb into the return line from the
oil cooler. This has always bothered me because I don't like using the
oil cooler as a filter. We we did install it between the outlet of the
engine and the inlet of the oil cooler we ran into pressure/temperature
issues. Since this was on a -TW there may have been more to the cause,
but moving the oil filter to the other side dropped the temperature.
We fabricate the -12 fittings for both the oil tank and the fire wall
fitting.
If you're going with the bypass indicator note that the case of the
filter body must be grounded to the aircraft.
Cheers,
Cliff

Richard,
I have a Yak52 TW w/ the ADC installed, I will include a link to a
picture, and would be glad to take more if needed. I have been pleased with
the unit, although the one drawback is the size ( it can get in the way )
I like being able to pull the screen every oil change, and KNOW what is
being caught, not send a spin off to someone, or just hope for the best..
But that is just my opinion..

David,
I see you removed the electric starter and put the plate with the
window on the left side of the case. Has this been working like you
expected? If so why the oil shut off. If positioning the crank
works, I would like the contact of where you bought it. I may not add
it to the 52, but I might to the 55 since it is air start only.

Hey there Herb,
I never had the electric starter on my TW, but I did add the sight glass.
I found the one I have in England ( the company name escapes me at the
moment) They only had two, and I got both for Tim and I.
To back up, my TW was TERRIBLE about not scavenging the oil after shutdown,
thus I would puke a cup at least of oil when I would pull through.. I added
the Kimball scavenger pump and the sight glass, and have been very happy
with both. That more or less, solved my problem.
The one draw back to the sight glass, you need to pull through the prop to
find the right spot, and normally you are doing this not long after shut
down... So, you have a hot 400HP M14, your head trying to look at a sigh
glass just behind the prop, and a high compression M14 that likes to kick
when she is hot... THUS..
I am installing the Kimball oil shutoff valve, I can shutdown, pull the
valve shut, scavenge the reservoir, walk away... With the shutoff valve
tied to my starter button, I can NOT start the engine without the valve
open, and I put the valve control in a spot that would get in the way, while
open..
Anyway, that is my thinking.. I could be all wrong..
PS - I met a gentleman from Italy this past week while he was getting
checked out in the Model 12 Pitts, and he knew the guy that makes the sight
glass. He promised to get me in touch with him. So, I hope to have a lead
on more, I will let you know.

Cliff-many thanks for that-it's what I thought!
I had 3 sets made a couple of years ago by ADC ,but we are not allowed to use them in Europe, but this is going to Australia.
ADC made it with Metric fittings for us!!

Hi Richard;
I have installed the ADC on the CJ6 with the HS6 engine (285 HP). Also installed them on the R1340 in the Harvard. In all cases worked well. Much rather deal with the mess from the ADC than the mess with cutting open the spin-on.
Disagree with the location that seems to be favoured on the list. One of the main reasons for installing an external filter is to contain any contaminants before they get to the oil cooler.
A metal contaminated oil cooler is a second engine failure waiting to happen even if you think it has been cleaned out.
Install the ADC in the oil out line.

I have a Airwolf filter on my 52. It is located before the cooler to keep the particles from entering the cooler as Airwolf recommends. Also Airwolf recommends the oil should be the hottest for the filter to flow and clean at max output and not block the cooler flow. The output pressure of the scavenge pump is not that high and needs to keep up the flow with the min pressure needed so care must be taken to assure the relief valve in the filter can open and not block the oil cooler relief valve and damage cooler. Cooling the oil and then forcing it through the filter is not as good of a idea as hot oil flowing through the filter.

Don't remember right now what the # is but all you need is the adapter and a bracket. It is not the Gorilla but a standard with large fittings. Airwolf sells a kit for the Yak but the hoses and clamps are too large and useless as far as I am concerned adding extra cost, as I remember you need -10 hoses and fittings and Airwolf sent -12 with slip on hoses and clamps. There is only 15 psi on the output. You might well make your own kit up using a different spin on filter plate also. The Champion filter has the correct bypass setting for what you need. I originall set all the information to Airwolf as they requested so it could be passed on. You will need to make your own fittings and the photo's I included show how I went from US back to Metric using the same hoses and brackets. The scavenge line from the engine needs to be angled back slightly to clear the engine mount. In the photo it is hard to see it so before finish welding I suggest a trial fit with the hose assemble complete. If anyone is truly interested I can do a complete How To. It seems every one has there own idea how to do it. I have 140 hours on my install.

I'll bring some display versions of my oil filter and mount for the CJ and Yak when I go to Waycross. Works well without costing nearly as much as the brand names.

Actually, with the ADC you can install a -12 hose with out any welding. All
you need is two fittings and you can convert it to US hose. I have the
fitting and I think Cliff Coy has them too. I have pictures if anyone needs
them.

Both ADC and Airwolf supply -12 fittings with their kits. That is the
correct size for the Huosai or M14 installation and virtually identical in
size to the original hose. ADC supply either metric or AN fittings for
installation with complete hose assemblies rather than hose & clamp style.

Hi Dale;
I honestly don't know the answer to that though some possibilities come to
mind.
1. Could be I have made an incorrect assumption that the Yak is the same as
the CJ in this respect. Would not be the first time!
2. I have not installed an Airwolf unit, just the ADC's and since I make my
own hose assemblies have not had occasion to order hose with the units. Any
possibility that Airwolf supplied the hose size for the R1340 (-16) rather
than -12??
I checked your photos but can not determine hose or fitting size. The hose
they sent you should have the designation on it. If it is Aeroguip 303 or
Stratoflex 111 (MIL-H-3794) it will show the size as a dash number
(-10, -12 etc.). If it is MIL-H-6000 it will show a fractional size (5/8,
3/4 etc.). The approximate actual ID for the -10 is about 1/2" and for
the -12 about 5/8".
Cheers;

Corrections,etc to below;
MIL-H-3794 should read -8794.
The actual ID for the MIL-H-6000 is the fractional size shown. This is a low
pressure hose with no steel mesh reinforcement and is intended for use in
short, clamped sections joining rigid pipelines.
