I get to pick my CFI instead of getting whatever loser commercial pilot wannabe that is
in line for the next lesson to build his hours at my expense? I had two
of those start training me only to let me know they would be leaving me
to work on their "twin-engine" hours toward the demise some other poor
guys checking account balance.

And exactly how would you propose to build YOUR hours towards a career
as a professional pilot? There are plenty of idiot /jackass instructors
out there BTW, some with gray hair and some with pimples.
A beginning airline pilot these days lives at or below the national
poverty line, they have to eat 20 cent "ramen" soup for dinner half the
time, they bunk three or four to an apartment, and they are worked like
farm animals for something like a three year probation period. But
unlike the guy pouring your coffee at Starbucks (who likely makes more
than a new hire airline pilot I'm told), the airline pilot carries the
responsibility for an airplane full of people, and is under unbelievable
pressure from all sides.
Anyone who is THAT dedicated to flying should be worthy of some extra
respect from you, while he is working for $10-15 an hour giving flight
instruction... on his way up to those lofty heights of being an "airline
pilot" who has to shop at the discount store for day-old bread and
select from the 99 cent "value menu" at McDonald's.
A person who tries to make himself feel better by making someone else
feel like a loser, is not a winner.
Feel free to tell me to ($%(at) off if you like, believe me I can take it.
But you owe that kid at the flight school an apology.

Just because someone is struggling and starving to become a commercial pilot
doesn't make them a good CFI. Which is what Scott is looking for.

Nah Bill. I don't owe him an apology. I gave him $1,000 and ended up with lots of excuses, runarounds and expensive ground school time which was useless. This guy drove an old Honda Civic that was leaking fuel. Mind you there was a baby seat in the back since he was a new dad. I noticed the fuel smell on our first encounter. I crawled up under there (something that he had never thought to do) and noticed it was a fuel filter rubber hose that would set him back about $10 and a little of his time. I don't think he fancied the idea of getting his polo shirt smudged.
This was the first day and he hadn't dipped into my $1,000 check yet. After that there were trips to the airport by me where I didn't find his leaky Honda and I'd get a call with an excuse why he couldn't make it. Then there were the days he informed me the airplane wasn't available after I had already arrived and he went over some flying pearls of wisdom in general conversation then he later charged me a half hour of ground school time for.
After about two months of this I checked his car again. Baby seat still in the back and drip, drip fuel on the gravel at the airstrip. I offered to fix the leak for him if he would just bring the new filter and hose to our next meeting. The few times he was able to show up after I had already arrived, he never had seemed to find the time to purchase the fuel filter or hose.
Don't get me started Bill. After this guy ditched me (his car is still leaking gas as far as I know if it hasn't burned to the ground), I got another guy who was just as unprofessional and completely uninterested in teaching me to fly. He would baby sit from the left seat but there was always some kind of excuse why his time was way more valuable than mine and how he couldn't wait to move up to his twin engine training. Then, after this second guy ditched me, just when I was getting close to completing my hours the school closed down because the owner wanted to change careers. He did offer to sell me a share of the pitiful airplane that I had been training in at a very high price. I guess he never heard me when I told him I was building an airplane!
After all this I received a bill for another several hundred dollars for ground school, etc. I paid it and decided to wait till the 40 hours were flown off my airplane.
It is no wonder the number of pilots is dropping every year.
