I am sorry to be pedantic - but there is no such thing as the 18R. The history is briefly:

  • Yak-18 first flew in 1945, with 160hp 5-cylinder engine.
  • Yak-18U - nose wheel version in production 54 - 57.
  • Yak-18A - was transformed by having the 260hp 9-cylinder, and still with nose wheel. Produced from 57 - 61.
  • Yak-18P - was a single seat version of the 18A, flown from the front seat. A few only were built in 1959. They also had a new undercarriage, with inward retraction. Production later increased, and in 61 - 62 125 aircraft were built.
  • Yak-18PM - was a further modification of 1965, with a 300hp engine, and flown from the rear cockpit. The PM dominated the 1966 World Championship, and 25 aircraft were built between 70 and 71.
  • Yak-18PS - was a lightweight PM, with the original Yak-18 undercarriage (like a Yak-50), and this competed in the 70 and 72 World Championships. It looks very similar to a Yak-50.
  • Finally the Yak-18T is somewhat of a misnomer, since it has nothing in common with the earlier 18's.
  • Sadly, the vast majority of these aircraft were destroyed by the Russians

Richard,

What was the number of the Yak that had a 4 or 6 place cabin that was sometimes used for air ambulance?

Richard,

I will accept your apology when you tell me what the hell "pedantic" means.

Very Happy

The 4-seater tail-dragger,with high-wing is the Yak-12.
The tricycle low-wing 4/6 seater is the 18T.
