I m having real fun painting my 601 XL.
I used aluma prep, Alodine and now in the process of applying epoxy primer. Man its a job..
I forgot how much work it is to get a good paint job.
Even tho I have done my homework, I still get runs and fish eyes in the primer. I figured that the primer is a good practice session....
Any good suggestions on "tricks of the trade " ??

Almost, almost , almost done.....

Steve, Block wet sand any runs or fisheye/ orange peal in the primer. Clean and wipe down with wax/grease remover before painting. Always whisk with a fresh tack cloth (buy only good ones from paint store) Gun adjustment, correct mixing and good paint filters with help prevent runs and orange peal. Fisheye comes most often from poor metal prep. Always remember that two light coats are better than one coat and three lighter coats are better than two. Watch the clock to insure you have sufficient time between coats. Don't paint over cured paint. Also, it's a lot of work to workout runs in final paint (ask me how I know that) Try not to put too much paint on your plane. Paint is heavy and more paint will not cover up ugly (unlike with the ladies). More light is necessary to see the paint flow. Low light is better than high light. Always prep a little more paint than you figure you'll need. It's better to pitch out a little excess than to have to stop in mid paint to go mix up some more paint. Always adds to the trash level in the painted surface. If as you say you've done your homework, most of what I could say you probably already know. I have painted many cars and one XL. Painting the bottom of the fuselage was like death, but on my plane it is the best I did. Dammed if I'm the only one that ever sees that part, when I clean the oil/dirt from the bottom. Good luck and best regards, Bill of Georgia
