Hi guys,

The latest Zenith newsletter has an interesting article on VGs for the
701. It provides rather good images and data for takeoff, landing angles
and distances. The focus was limited to either slats or VGs or just no
slats. Hasn’t anyone tried to find a best place for VGs with slats to
see if there might be an even better result?

Just a thought,

I've often wondered this myself. With the slats in place and VGs (presumably a little further back) wouldn't you get the benefits of both? But, how would you know where to place them for sure?

There was a ling on rec.aviation.homebuilt within the last week or so about a Cub like plane with slats added. The link showed both slats and VGs.

I've done some work in that direction, but couldn't find any further improvement with VGs as well as slats. Slats or VGs in themselves don't give a higher coefficient of lift, they just allow the wing to fly at a higher angle of attack, and thus generate more lift. The slats already work well at allowing that very high angle of attack, so there's nothing further for VGs to do. Either slats or VGs on their own allow pretty much the same maximum AoA, it's just that VGs do it with less drag. Any higher than that 20+ degrees brings other limitations, such as the tail hits the ground....

I've also tried the possibility of VGs on the flaperons. But video tufting showed that the flaperons don't stall no matter what. Even hanging on the prop at an extremely high AoA wouldn't stall them. So the slot effect, the upper surface profile, and the hinge geometry of those flaperons are really effective - all credit to Chris Heintz on that one!

Yes Larry, I too found CH's article interesting and had the thought about the location of the VG's as well as what would be the performance with the slat slots closed, and with VG's. I realize one might not win the speed race as some are doing with that extra 3 to 7 MPH, but what about control and other parameters? How would it effect the STOL and the control characteristics? Many report that the control is much better without slats and with VG's. I won't be modifying my 701 from the plans to get more speed, maybe later for more control and more lift. .
