I have a friend coming to visit who is an aviation enthusiast and we're talking about my giving him a ride in my IV-1200. The kicker is that he's 5'10" and admits to weighing 260. This would be the biggest/heaviest passenger I've carried by at least 50 pounds and wonder if anyone has had a similar experience. We would definitely not be over-gross but I wonder about seat integrity and control freedom.

Take the right side stick off and fly with doors open and you won't have a problem.

Bill, the only thing I experience with heavy passenger and a hard langing in my model 3 is that the passenger's door pops open. Nothing to worry about but I usually warn all passenger that it may happen.

When I checked out in Lowell's IV-1200 I weighed about 195 and the instructor weighed close to 250. We were so tight it was comical, but nobody seemed to think it was a problem, and it wasn't.

Be ready to add a little power on short final, your sink rate will be a little bit higher. I had someone who was 6’2” and 250 lbs. and I notice a difference.

Michel,
Good point - I had a similar experience with a smaller but still substantial
passenger a few months ago and after the third or fourth hard landing his
door did pop. As Roger pointed out one needs to accommodate the higher sink
rate and it took me a few tries to get it right.

Just wondering why you say to take the doors off.. I have been in my plane (Model III-A actual Mod II) with myself at close to 250 and another pilot at close to 200 lb. We didn’t fly because we just couldn’t develop enough horsepower ( faulty tach) to get up on step. The With the fuel on board we were around 1050 lb. Which I would probably have done some flight in ground effect. What I’m trying to get at is there was plenty of room with the doors on and both sticks installed. In fact there was more room than in the Stinson 108 I tried to fly.... The yoke in that plane was situated in such a way it would require me to take the door off to give me enough elbow room.
The most room I’ve seen in any plane including the Boeing 737 was the Super Cub.

Do you suppose that John McBean still sells the double-pin door latch
kits? I've got 'em on my Speedster, plus the bottom latch...three
points of contact with the door jambs, and the double-pins are almost
foolproof. I doubt that the door would EVER come open short of
wadding up the fuselage.
Also, I've had a 250-pounder in my plane with full tanks (156 lbs),
and at that point we were about 15 lbs over gross...did I just admit
to a violation of the rules? Damn, somebody must be sneaking in here
again and playing with my computer.

Just kidding of course, but I thought, if it really wan't working out; with the door open, no stick, you could drop the right wing, unbuckle him quick while kicking full left rudder, and be back to normal real quick, Jim Chuk

Don't feel too bad Lynn.

When I was a kid I flew all over Newfoundland with my father in a C170B on
floats. Most of the time we were salmon fishing and the old bird, CF-HIM,
was half decent at getting us in (and out) of some nice ponds, close to the
type of pools that dreams are made of. Of course we took everything we
needed to survive for about fifty years (exaggeration...maybe) The running
joke around the hangar is the normal takeoff weight for our plane was about
a hundred pounds or so overweight. For years I thought it was normal to
have the last compartment of both floats submerged when slow taxiing.

When I was in the Stinson I was thinking about a bubble door with enough room to get my elbow into the bubble. J BTW the same plane with a stick would have had thousands of room. It was just that the yoke takes up so much room and was close to the door. The guy who owned the plane is around 5’6” and when he flared he had to wrap his arm around the yoke to give himself enough room to pull it fully back. I’m 5’11” with 39” arms... 30” legs... should have made a good football player... low CG J.

I was in the right seat and I’m left handed... using the yoke left handed wasn’t a problem except I couldn’t handle the yoke and throttle at the same time. The next plane I flew was a Super Cub... Loved it... Much like the Kitfox with a growl. It did take a bit of getting used to using the stick with my right (wrong) hand. By the third landing I had it down pretty well. One of the amazing things about the Super Cub is the amount of space in the cockpit. The left seat in a 737 has much less room and is actually harder to get in and out of.

Here are two shots that I have, Pat. The kit that I had required
several parts to be made from stock that was furnished. Instructions
came with the kit as supplied in 1994.

Above: This is the bellcrank that transmits the center, turning
motion into fore-and-aft rods that engage pins into sockets in the
fuselage.

Above: On the left is the fuselage socket (fastened with 4 SS
rivets), with the pin engaged, and on the right is the guide
(fastened with 5 SS rivets)
and the actuating rod. I hope this makes sense. It's hard to get the
overall picture of how it works because I zoomed in a little too
close when I shot it.

Not to be a critic, but riveting into the airframe tubing isn't really a good
idea, nor necessary since you already have the tab there.

Lynn, I can't wait to meet you, maybe at Oshkosh. I can't believe you have pictures of the door latch system back to me immediately. I have found the Kitfox "Mother Lode" on this website and sent my contribution to Matt last week. With the info you "experts" have that is available to us beginners, I ought to make it a monthly contribution.

Lynn,
That is the best latching system I have ever seen! I wonder why they did
away with it? Jeff CMH Classic IV
