Hmm.. it pulled up a Danish windmill destroying itself in a storm.
Impressive video - especially when you get the scale of the windmill.

Yes but the interesting point is that you can clearly see that it is one of the blades that hit the mast. Now, I am not sure I understand this: A prop blade is shaped like a wing profile, right? The faster it spins ... it should be pulled >>away<< from the mast ... shouldn't it?

in the vids at the bottom of that link, is a clip of the Valdez AK STOL contest that we have every year. nothing like a PA 18 getting of with less than one rotation of the tire. N02 is cool stuff.
The bushwacker from big rocks long props is the one you see landing. Pretty impressive.

Michel, in the case of the wind generator the wind is turning the prop which is facing into the wind. Think about it.
The short take off cub is the "Carbon Cub" built by Cub crafters as a one off with one purpose...win the Valdez short take off contest which it did at 19 feet. Its for sale for something like 200 Gs. if anyone wants to buy it I'll find the add for you.

The blade that hit the pylon was not the first blade to depart. It's
really interesting in slow motion. The 1st blade departs and is hit by
the 2nd blade. At the same time, the whole thing nods down around 45
degrees and the 3rd blade impacts the pylon and departs. Gyroscopic
effect in play.
I flew gyroplanes for some years, and similar things happen when a
rotorblade departs. Off it goes, but the remaining one will typically
eat the fuslage as it destroys itself and all attached.
All this is pretty off topic though. The STOL takeoffs are just
amazing. Man.. in his own fuslage length. That's cool!

Hum ... do you want me to think, Tom? I guess, you're probably right ... if I compare to a helicopter rotor.

We also have gyrocopters here, John. But - as far as I know - they all have a two-blades rotor in one piece. Difficult to see then a blade departing but ... I only look at them, I don't fly them nor know of their problems.

Michel:
I think waht john was getting at is on a gyro the high pressure area is
under the rotor... the same side as the axel that carries it. On the
generator the high pressure is opposite the axel which would make the cone
effect to occur toward the axel or into the support.
