Jack,

How is your MZ 34 installation going with the Firefly?

Ed,

Right now it is static. I have designed up an engine test stand that will
be mounted on a little trailer, so that I can run the engine before mounting
it on the FireFly. The MZ34 comes with a pumper carburetor. I would like
to use a variable throat carburetor, as I understand them better. The steel
has been purchased and delivered, but no cutting or welding has been done.
My welder is in and unheated open barn. I hope the test stand will let me
dial in the engine. I have had enough sick on take-off test flights.

Life keeps getting into the way. This winter has been cruel. I have a
landing leg re-enforcing cable kit ready to install, but it has been too
cold to work in the hangar and/or the doors have been frozen shut due to
snow and ice. My wife moved me up here, built a house, and over spent, so a
few things could not be done. Last summer, I moved about 170 cubic yards of
dirt to make a walk out for the basement with a 20 hp tractor, push blade
and subsoil ripper. But I could not get it done in time to get grass
started on it. As result the FireFly had to stay in the hangar. Next
winter I will bring it home and wheel it into my basement shop.

Being new in the neighborhood really puts a kink in your ability to get
things done. In two years I have found a reasonable chip shop for machine
work, a good welder, etc. Today I am to pick up a used Rotax 447 for $40
and an unknown wankel $??. I like engines, and I want the carburetor off the
447 to try out an idea for in the air air/fuel ratio adjustment. Richard
Pike gave me an idea and I want to try it out on the Victor 1+.

We really were clobbered by the last snow, and as I sit here, I can look out
of my basement shop and see the snow falling today. It is supposed to warm
up through out the rest of the week.

I would like to get more done, but my days are full, and at my age every day
is a gift. When the snow and ice permit opening the hangar doors, I visit
the FireFly. It gives me hope that the weather will warm and I will get
back into the air.

It is amazing how little things get complicated. I found a helmet video
camera on the web and purchased it, so my family could see what it was like
to fly in the FireFly. But my computers were too old to connect to the
camera. So I purchased new computers, and I am having a hard time getting
the data transferred from the old to the new machines. A good problem, but
one I wish I did not have to address. I would rather piddle around working
on the FireFly.

Waiting for some flying weather.

Glad I live in the South - 64 degrees today, supposed to be 70 by Thursday.

For what it's worth:
Windows XP also has a transfer utility. It won't move programs, but it
will handle your data and system settings.
The utility is called the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". To find
it, click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools. If you use
this wizard you can use a null modem serial cable to hook the two
computers together. You should be able to find that at an electronics
store for less than $15. Worth a try.
