We had been having problems starting our 52TW, it would always start but seemed difficult to get the engine up to a steady idle. Often we found a lot of fuel in the lower cylinder drain valve.

We found that the nozzle which sprays primed fuel into the system was clogged and appeared to be dripping fuel down the manifold rather than atomizing it.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

I had almost the same experience. Turned out I had a leaking primer
hose that was leaking underneath the fire shield cloth and was hard to
see.

Try this for a test. Next time you prime the engine, leave the primer
handle turned and do not center it. Start the engine. This will allow
fuel to continue to come through the priming line and the engine will
run very rich, but will help it to continue to run. Once the engine is
firmly running, put the primer handle to vertical.

When I looked mine, there was no "atomizing nozzle" Ira, just a straight
line that screws into the manifold.

If you have the lower cylinder drains... Yes, there is ALWAYS extra fuel
in there when you prime.
