Any input on the best way to paint the PVC strut covers?
Will polytone adhere or do I need to prime it up with epoxy primer?
Thanks!

I covered mine with fabric and painted with Poly-tone. If you don't
cover with fabric, you should use Polyfiber enamel, if you stay in
the Polyfiber line of products. Poly-tone should not be used over
plastic/PVC.

You really don't want to paint the PVC struts without covering them first
with fabric.

Lynn, How did you attach fabric to PVC? All of the Poly Fibre products Tak, Brush & Tone are MEK based. Wouldn't any of those attack the PVC?

The best way to paint PVC and fiberglass is to use 2 part epoxy chromate primer and while it is still wet paint the polytone paint. It works great, 1300 hours to prove it. Clint

They say Polytone just isn't to be used on a hard surface, but there
is a way to do it, as told to me by Jim Miller the Poly rep in
Columbus, Ohio. You prime with Poly's 2-part epoxy primer, and when
still tacky, shoot with your Poly-tone color. I had to do this when I
installed my flaperon hinges onto the wings. Once the hinges are
treated this way, you can rivet them on, and then shoot the whole
wing with the Poly-tone finish color.
So in your case, I'd shoot with the Polyfiber 2-part epoxy primer,
and while still tacky, shoot with the polytone, but I'd be sure and
use all Polyfiber products if going this route.
But I'd much rather cover with fabric and go the Polyfiber route all
the way. I even covered the strut fairing with fabric, where the
tubes come together.
Call me anal, but I'd rather read the instructions and follow them,
as they probably know best. Yeah, they probably make some sales this
way, but the method is proven.

Nope, no attack. Apparently the polytak dries so quickly that it
doesn't dissolve the PVC...worked for me. And once the fabric is on,
and covered with 'brush, nothing seeps through the fabric to get to
the PVC. You might try dipping a little piece of PVC into the 'tak
and see, but in actual application, the PVC isn't subjected to the
really wet 'tak for very long.

A number of years ago when I built a Challenger II, I painted all the
metal, fiberglass, and PVC parts just that way. Shoot 2-part epoxy
primer and then the polytone while the epoxy was still tacky.
You have to then be patient, because the epoxy seems to take a long time
(more than a week) to fully set up. During the setup, the polytone is
very soft and subject to scratching. The results were well worth the
effort though. The polytone bonded nicely with the epoxy and resulted
in a very durable finish that exactly matched the fabric. I never had
any flaking or other problems with the polytone lifting off the epoxy.
I'll be using that method when I start on my Kitfox.

Good idea, John. It kills me to have to soak the epoxy primer for 7
days at 70°, but that's what they recommend, and I followed it to the
letter. Good thing I was painting mostly in the summer, but I moved
the painted stuff into the smaller, warmer shop for the long heat
soak period in the cooler months.
By the way, John, I lived for almost 22 years in Davis, Dixon and
Esparto, CA, all near Woodland, leaving in 2001. I learned to fly RC
models at the Woodland/Davis field...on Pole Line Rd/ Rd 101, was it?

Thanks for the input! I think I'll try scuffing it, nailing it with 2 part, then spritzing it with polytone. The drying time will force me to work on other things!!!
S7 coming along. All covered and painted (I know, I know, there are always things that need to be painted still...) and it looks great. Used Brian Sorensen's Bearhawk's secret green recipe (from cover of Sport Aviation a few months back) and put on the quasi-military markings. Have my father's old P-3 squadron insignia on the tail (Neptune's Trident). It looks "NASTY"....Lotsa fun!.
Thanks again!
