The 1st qtr magazine just went to print, in there is information on preparing for Oshkosh and an emphasis on three items:
I know that Oshkosh and SunnFun have traditionally been pretty much "show up and plan on the fly" and that has frustrated execution, but you have to know this years Air Venture is being given a bit more RPA effort - from folks all over the map
Those points:
1. This is first a "national" event for all members, as the RPA celebrates its 15th anniversary since inception as the YPC in 1993. The event is getting more organizational planning (from parties, banquets, RPA reserved hotels and transportation support) to support ALL who want to attend by any method, train, plane, automobile - CJ, Yak, IAR, AV, MiG, Other...so even if you aren't FAST qualed, or do not own a CJ-6, it's the RPAs "15th", the CJ-6's "50th" and the Yak 52's "30th" - so if attending Oshkosh is a maybe on your list, check out the magazine article on new inexpensive billeting, the itinerary, etc. and make the call.
2. RPA is hosting a members banquet on Friday Aug 1st. Traditionally folks came early to MTW and many would have departed by Friday afternoon/saturday, and our formations would shrink accordingly. This year the planners want you to plan your arrival, based somewhat on staying for your members friday banquet if possible (and a full flight demonstration on friday, & saturday if your flying). When you register online, accurate arrival and departure dates are a must as they will pay for catering to reflect your attendance. To support this, the RPA is setting up cheap billets, transportation, parties, etc.
3. "50" formation (brain child of Jim Goolsby, in recognition of the aircrafts 50th year of production): This takes 31 aircraft, 8 flights. These flights can and should come from around the regions (southeast, southwest, southcentral, etc.) . RPA is asking CJ-6 leads to organize their local groups who will be attending to practice the sightlines and procedures for the "50". After flight testing at Waycross, a PDF document was sent out last month to Flight Leads reflecting sightlines and organization to work from locally. The current concept is three main formations, the "5", the "0" (both CJ as able) and a traditional trailing mass formation of all qualified members. Darrell is (as of yesterday) working on group and flight lead assignments, so all local groups should determine arrival dates, their flight leader, wingmen, etc. Hopefully the turn out is large enough to pull alternates as needed.
-- The traditional (trailing) mass formation is important; made up of all aircraft, the hope is to have a lot of symmetrical "smokers" to really give the illusion/impression of mass/large numbers. The leader of this group would logically be a Yak owner/flight lead, as we hope to have a large turn out and there is a lot of talent here (absolutely no favoritism is being shown through the planning of the CJ "50" formation - it was simply a great idea Pappy surfaced last year, Air Venture is for all members to eat roasted pig, play crud, hang out, fly....
-- The first "50" demonstration with a mass trailing during air venture according to the latest itinerary worked out with Wayne Boggs is WEDNESDAY, July 30th, and includes a CJ-6 peeling off to fly an aerobatics demonstration at 500 ft after the flyby. So if you are flying in this formation, there will be a roll call/mission briefing on Tuesday evening you must be present for. There will be the traditional warbird arrival on Monday if your present, but Wednesday is slated as the first money shot, followed by Friday and then Saturday.
-- Craig Payne is setting up a pre-osh fly-in at West Bend July 25-27 (fri-sun). While it would be great if everyone flying went to this pre-event, for some of you, this may be a challenge if you are wanting to stay through the entire week for the RPA banquet on Friday and EAA awards banquet on sat (and fly those days demonstrations) and then use the remainder of the weekend to travel home. Again, this is why local groups should insure they register their accurate arrival and departure dates and prepare locally with the guidance RPA sends out.
Things change, RPA will use the Ecom system, magazine and this list to update info. I will resend the PDF mentioned here to all form pilots,
This may have generated some questions, email admin(at)flyredstar.org (admin(at)flyredstar.org) so a few folks can hear and respond. Any errors, I will publish a retraction,
