The recent discussions about the Corvair engine are very intriguing. I keep watching the Flywithgus.com 701 test flight video from his site. The setup looks good, sounds good and seems to fly well. He got off the ground in a very short distance. To me the Corvair has a lot of potential. Plus, the price is right.

The one big question is: The designer has designated a certain weight allowance for the engine in the 701 and the Corvair is clearly over this. How do we reconcile this fact? In other words, given what the designer has specified, can the Corvair really be safely used in the 701? What are the issues that have to be dealt with?

I'm no expert and would appreciate yr thoughts.

Thanks

William and Gus are working on the Corvair on the 701 with the cooperation
of Zenith. Ask William for specifics.

"Cooperation" may be too strong a word. Zenith knows the specifics of
William's Corvair/XL installation and the weight numbers and thinks it is
feasible. William cares very much what the factory thinks. As far as kit
builders go Zenith strikes me as the most open-minded. Their web site says
this about the 601XL (not the 701):

"While all aircraft are designed within certain power and engine weight
guidelines, Chris Heintz did not design the ZODIAC XL "around" a particular
engine - to maximize the customer's choice of installed powerplant.
Recommended power is 80 to 125 horsepower, up to 300 lbs. installed weight"
http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/xl/xl-engine.html

This is quite a contrast with (for example) the RV-12 which looks like it
will be hard to adapt to an engine other than the Rotax (a fine but
expensive engine).
