Ivan:
Most of what you have said about pre-mixing VS injection is accurate.... but there is another factor that you haven’t considered. That is the effect of ethanol in the gas.
If you are unlucky enough to live in a place there the gas has been contaminated with 10% Ethanol or more, and you premix..you can get a phenomenon called phase separation. Actually as the temperature drops any gas contaminated with Ethanol can undergo phase separation. When the gas is pre mixed it get especially bad because the oil is dragged out of the gas into the separation with any water, from humidity in the air, and will sink like a rock to the bottom of your fuel. This milky looking, gooey, mess will a. Stop your engine and b. Be a real nice mess to have to clean up once you get back on the ground.
Not all is bad with pre-mixing. A bit of oil in your fuel will protect your tanks from ethanol damage. Apparently Ethanol likes to attack oil more than fibre glass fillers. This is especially valuable if you have epoxy fibreglass tanks.
This is one of those items where there is no right answer... Short of only using ethanol for drinking or cleaning... You can only do what you think is right.

Mark
I have had a 582 with no problems. I still prefered to mix my oil. I have heard from more knowledgeable people that the oil injection is just one more thing to go wrong and fail unlike mixing the oil NEVER fails. I would certainly trust mixing oil if I was on a xc. Did a cross country of 300+ miles once and just brought some oil with me. Either figured out how much was in the gas tank and added the appropriate amount of oil or had a 5 gal jug along to mix. I have also "heard" that one has less control with oil injection because it doesnt adapt well when t he RPM changes. I fly trikes by the way and never thought of oil mixing as a pain. It was just my extra margin of safety.

What advantages does one set up have over the other and why??I'm looking to get my cake and eat it here ??? 8-)ThanksMark |
