I spoke with a man yesterday at our annual airpark pissing contest(excuse me -meeting) He is one of the team developing the new Continental O-200 in Mobile. He mentioned that they are continuing to shed weight in the engine and it would soon be close to Rotax territory in weight (he mentioned they have lopped off around 30lbs) They still are using mags on the certified version but some builders are using CDI on the experimental versions and possible fuel injection to come. The neat thing about this is the experimental engine should sell in the $16,000-$17000 territory. With the dollar falling and Rotax going out of sight this might be an option one day. I know I would rather have the O-200.

I wonder if the O-200D is still going to use rubber and cork gaskets
that make its older brother allergic to ethanol?

PS, the word from Wall St. is that the dollar has finally started its
long climb back against the Euro.

I don't see how they can get a 200 cu in engine down close to the weight of a 79 cu in engine but they are trying. Still got about 50-60 lbs of weight loss to go.

USD vs EUR fall appears to be stalled and even reversing, if you look at the 1 month chart attached. But taking a longer perspective as in the 5 year chart, also attached, I'm not so sure a meaningful reversal has begun. Hope I'm wrong.

Thom
The Jabiru 3300, 201 cu in engine is about 70 lbs. less than the O-200 so I
guess it has been done already.

According to the data I've seen, the 3300 weighs 81 kg which is about 178 lb. I hear the new O-200D is about 200 lb. and the Rotax 912ULS is about 148 lb. but these could all be wrong. At any rate, it is clear that Jabiru has an advantage in hp/lb compared to Lycs and Continentals.

Hi! Tom
Probably what you say is correct however I can vouch for the fact that
it is developed torque that turns the propeller not HP and certainly not
Aussy Ponies !

Torque to horsepower is nothing more than a simple math equation. How can one turn a prop and the other not?

Hi all, have to agree with Bob H, Spent more than six years of rebuilds,
upgrade's and misery trying to get the desired output from the Aussie unit.
Threw in the towel eighteen months ago, my 912s has delivered for 125hrs on
the turn of the key with Zero crap.

Hi! Tom
Likewise, the simple answer is to use the engine at very high RPM and
extract more torque through a gear box to the final drive. The Jabiru
cubic capacity being 3.3 ltrs compared to the Rotax at 1.6 ltrs does not
produce anywhere near similar torque to the smaller engine at near
double the RPM.
In consequence my hopes of the Jab being a "pocket rocket" were
miserably dashed.
