Found out today my tach is not accurate and will need to be replaced as it cannot be adjusted (through the hole in the back) far enough. It is the 2 1/4" Rotax tach.
What tach do you guys use for the Rotrax 912 (80hp) that fits the 2 1/4" panel hole? What do you like about yours? What do you dislike about yours? Where did you get yours?

Had a UMA 2 1/4" worked okay. Now have EFIS. Not sure of the best price but Aircraft Spruce has traditional looking UMA for 912 $112.00 or lighted $132.00.

UMA With color marking. Had UMA regular for years and worked great. Sold it on Ebay and bought one with color markings, wouldn't leave home without it.

Anybody know a source for the colored tape -- Yellow, red, green, white -- (or suitable alternative) to mark the airspeed indicator? Prefer something I don't have to mail order for.
Thanks,

Auto detailers, Auto Zone, Checker. Paint from the hobby store. Electrical tape.
I have used all of these for years on my various auto projects.
Paint is best the tape will fall off after several years in the hot sun.

you got me... yes i ment that you use the fingernail polish to to mark the instruments, unless you are in seattle or california, in which case, your A&P may, better appreciate, the use of neon green, snow white, pimping yellow and super succulent red. Make sure you get an extra bottle of each to leave with the mechanic so he can look good when he goes out on Friday night..

Thanks for the clarification.... : )
Actually..., we do use clear nail polish in the restoration shop. Wires are often wrapped an\or bundled using the old fashion "friction tape"..., you know, the sticky black stuff that we used as kids to re-wrap worn baseballs. After the wraping\bundeling is complete, the tape is coated with the clear polish to seal the tape from moisture. Looks good, and lasts for years. This is standard in the military maintenance manuals from the '40's, except they specify clear industrial lacquer. No tie-wraps in an "original" Stearman or T-6
The little bottle of polish is easier to work with, and lives in the tool box quite nice.

Steve-
Also, the friction tape, probably now residing in the Smithsonian,
was once the only thing used on hockey sticks. Being a Michigander,
Steve, you should have known this. : )
Bonus info: In the dark, if you quickly pull some friction tape off
the roll, you will see a static "light show" right where the pulled
tape leaves the roll. One can amuse oneself for hours while watching
this phenomenon. : ) This also works with other tapes as well.

Lynn,
I'm so glad you got into aviation. You definitely needed a new hobby.
One possible explanation....., If I'm correct, helmets were not used in hockey in the '60's eh?

Steve-
As a matter of fact, it was an on-ice incident at Jackson's (Mich)
Ice Arena, where I used to play, that caused the Michigan Hockey
Ass'n. to adopt the helmet rule. A guy by the name of John (I think)
Shawinabin, was checked into the boards head first, and later died
as a result of the injuries. Our team, the Jackson Jaguars, were
playing two games at an outdoor ice arena in Bay City, I think, when
I learned of this incident.
After this rule went into effect, we couldn't even set foot onto the
ice without a helmet on our heads.
And that folks, is the reason that I am like I am....I played before
the helmet rule, and took a few to the noggin'.

Not to ruin the "tape sparks" here, but the thread was originally about tachometers. Anyone have any info on the darn things that measure RPMs and then can be highlighted with colored tape?

Sorry to step out of line...
All the dial type tachometers can do what you asked. The digital ones you will have to know the red lines and the operating envelope. Digital works better for accuracy but analogue works miles better for trends.
Various methods of marking the glass in the front of the analogue tachometers has already been discussed. Decide where to make your arcs from the operating manuals for your particular engine.
