Carlos,
Many many moons ago the damping fluid for the magnetic compass was alcohol as it was cheep, readily available and would not freeze.

Just for fun, will somebody please explain why do you Americans call
"Whisky" to the magnetic compass?
Is it because you only follow that needle when you had too much scotch
before flying
