Airplane has been encased in ice of late. Life in the Great White North...sigh.

Yesterday was warm so I went out to fire up the engine. Turning the prop by hand showed more resistance on one of the compression strokes. I pulled the plugs and one cylinder had oil in it...about a half a cup or so. I have seen this before when the plane sat for awhile. Oil seems to seep into the cylinders...probably because the oil tank is on the top of the engine and it syphons into the crankcase and it seeps past the rings over time. Last time it was one of the rear cylinders..but I was on wheels then. This time a front...on anphibs it sits slightly nose down.

Anyone else see this kind of thing? Hopefully so. I am hoping I do not have a ring issue or something like that.

the airplane dealer across from me some time ago when I got a Model 3 with a 912 uls that it is important to hand prop as this is a common problem when the oil tank is mounted high.

Gary,
I experienced the same thing on floats. No oil as tail dragger, resistance and oil in a cylinder after sitting on floats (wintertime). Like you, i remember to pull thru before starting.

With the radial engines, also dry sump, they used to say to wait until twelve blades (four blade prop) passed the window before turning on the mags. The phenomenon called hydraulic lock where lower cylinders can fill with oil and can actually have the cylinders blown off the engine when other cylinders fire. You are doing good... keep checking before each start.

Gary,
It's perfectly normal to have oil siphon from a high oil tank into the cylinders over time. My Kitfox does it all the time. It's just like a radial engine I used to have on a Waco. That is why you turn the prop thru so as to prevent a "hydraulic lock" which will do a number on your engine.
If you check your oil level without turning the prop, you can see the quantity go down on the dipstick for each day that you do not rotate the prop. Mine goes from max to below min in a week.
Nature of the beast I guess

Dick and all,

In addition to that, after trailering mine 1700 mi, a theory not proven, it drains faster bouncing on the trailer. A short trip to the airport could require a couple of rotations.
