Count me in, Travis. A friend and I are gonna try it again, he in a
C150, and hope to get beyond our shutdown (chicken out) point of last
year...Scott County Airport, Tennessee.
We may not leave until Saturday, the 5th...not sure yet. Oh, wait,
you said Friday the 11th! Just for the weekend, eh?

I'm going to S-N-F, but my friend is flying into Zephyrhills airport
and getting a car from there. I'll be camping at S-N-F. What is the
difference between the two locations that you mentioned as far as
camping/distance is concerned?

I wouldn't mind landing in Mobile, AL, as I have yet to land in
Alabama, and I need it as part of my tentative 49-state landing
goal...eventual landing goal. : )
Please send info to me at least, Travis...privately, unless you have
a big enough demand that warrants list posting.
Hot damn...I'm gettin' excited!

We are planning on flying to Sun-N-Fun again this year. Last year
we camped in the Homebuilt Camping area. Not too bad. This year
we are returning to our roots…of many years ago and land and camp
in the Ultralight Area (it is now mostly Sport Planes). That is a
little closer to the facilities and not so far out!

Our tentative plans, weather permitting, will be to depart Mobile,
AL on Friday, 4/11/08, around daybreak or earlier. We’ll land at
Quincy, FL (2J9, just northwest of Tallahassee) for fuel and a
short break. From there we will fly direct to SNF. Our departure
from SNF will be Sunday morning, 4/13/08, for the return flight
back home.

Do we have any other Kitfox’s on the forum that will be flying
(or driving) to SNF? If so, please share your plans! If your
route of travel will be taking you through LA (Lower Alabama) we
will be happy to provide ground transportation for meals, hotels,
etc (prior to our departure on Friday!).

We fly out of a private strip, 1,800’ (not on sectional) that is
located about 16 miles southeast of Mobile Regional Airport, MOB.
I will provide GPS coordinates, pictures, etc of our airport for
anyone that is interested.

Where are you gonna camp Lynn? I'm going to FL for a wedding in Miami and have planned a night in Lakeland and a day at SNF. Let me know where you'll be and I'll look you up, buy you a beer or 3.

Ooooh, S'n'F's soundin' better all the time.
I'm planning on the Homebuilt Camping, but according to Travis, some
Sport Planes are camping in the Ultralight area. So my plans aren't
fixed just yet, but probably the Homebuilt Camp is a pretty good bet,
as it's more descriptive of what I've got. Let's get together off-
list and exchange cell numbers. Remember, I owe you a cigar.

I wonder if they allow for open fires? Gotta bring my tiki torches

If your going to Fun and Sun and you have owned your aircraft less than 6 months, the desperate state of Florida can(WILL) TAX you up to $30,000, YES THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS for just being in Florida. I just read this on Aero-News Network last week. I went to their archives so I could tell you exactly when it ran but their web site is down. Here is an example; If you bought your airplane in Michigan and paid $2500 tax on it, the state of Florida will tax you $30000 and will return $2500 to you. However, the burden of proof is on you. I don't recall if $30000 is the top or bottom cap but if you have owned the plane less than 6 months, and they catch you there, THEY WILL TAX YOU!!!!! I also receive Aero news network. I can confirm Don's post. I couldn't believe what I was reading, Crazy nutso, right? But there it was in electronic black and white. The article went on to say that SNF had been declining for years and this could be the proverbial stake in the heart. The article also noted that an inquiry by phone to SNF staff received less than forthcoming answers. Could this possibly be true? I checked both AOPA and EAA sites, but could find no substantiating stories. I guess if I was planning to fly my brand new plane to SNF(I wish), I'd be digging deeper till I found out for sure. If anyone finds out if this state revenue generating gone berserk is true, please let everyone know.

Luis,

Study the arrival procedures until you can recite them back. Then watch for
other planes and listen. It is tremendous fun to land with planes a couple
hundred yards ahead of you and behind you and one next to you all landing at
the same time.

Guys, The Florida tax plan on airplanes is on Aero News Network on 03/14/2008. You can recover the archive from the location at the bottom of the page. It is the third article down "Florida Tax Ripoffs... "
Don't fly your airplane to Florida until you read this Don

What could possibly be their justification in doing this? What flaw
in whatever passes as law down there allows them to do this?
I've had my plane for longer than the six months mentioned, but this
law/rule/whatever pisses me off enough to stay away in protest. I've
never understood their (SNF's)pricing policy as it pertains to taking
your money for a campsite for the week and not giving back a refund
if you leave early, like Oshkosh does.
Regarding a phone call to SNF, I did just that a year ago, to find
out more about camping, fees, etc., and was given different answers
by different people. This latest ploy, if it's true, is enough to
park me just for spite.

I've flown into Sun n Fun a couple times, although not into the ultralight
area. I did camp on the field one time and the facilities were very good,
clean, etc. If you're used to tent camping I would say they're nicer than
most state parks (and definitely cleaner).
The last couple times I was at Sun n Fun I spent a considerable amount of
time in the ultralight area simply for the fact that it was such a cool
place to hang out. Everyone there seemed to be having a great time, whether
they were flying, grading landings, hangar flying, whatever. I would LOVE
to fly in there when I get my 'Fox in the air. I would most definitely opt
for camping there rather than anywhere else. There's a lot of activity, the
tram comes right to the area, and it has a very 'homey feel. When I was
there last there were a few people camping right there or very close by.
There was a very laid back fun atmosphere that just kept bringing me back.
There was a large variety of ultralights, trikes, and a few experimentals
flying out of the ultralight area, including Hummelbird, Just Aircraft
Highlanders, and many others. I'm sure a 'Fox will have no trouble getting
in and out of there and looking good doing it.

Travis' pics and directions are spot on from what I could see. I will note
that all the times I watched the pattern operations they were flying a very
low pattern. If you come in at 500' I think you'll be considerably higher
than a lot of the other traffic. Keep your eyes out of the cockpit looking
for other aircraft! The nice part is you come in on final over a roped off
field next to the parking lot with no obstructions, so you can really put it
on the numbers (even though there arent' any).

For many years I've been following the saga of Zoom Campbell, owner, editor, publisher of ANN (Aero News Network). Zoom has definitely created an armload of enemies at SNF, but as in most other cases where accusations are made, there are always two sides to the stories. Of course, if it's printed on the Internet in various forums like bloggers, forums, groups, "email lists", etc., it all has to be true! I'm definitely not defending him, but one needs to remember to approach Internet "facts" with a healthy dose of skepticism. One person on a mission with good keyboard skills can do a pretty good job of vilifying pretty much anyone, Zoom included. Some people credit him with single handedly destroying the Revolution helicopter business, but not killing all those who died in them.
As for the FL tax on airplanes, it sounds to me a bit far fetched, but there may be some shred of truth in it. More info is needed.

If I can get by the paperwork, customs, passport, whatever is keeping
a Sport Pilot from going into Canada on the way to Alaska, I'll make
the 49 eventually, but for the 50th, I was thinking of robbing a bank
so I could afford to have my plane shipped to Hawaii and then do a
pattern flight there, then die happy. : )

There was a similar panic on the Lancair site recently with regard to Maine. It generated so much heat the following was posted by the State of Maine: ( https://maine.gov/revenue/salesuse/usetax/AircraftNotice.html)

"Incomplete and inaccurate information has recently been circulated on the subject of Maines use tax as it applies to aircraft purchased outside of Maine by nonresidents. Stories that have appeared on the internet have left the impression that Maine law imposes, and that Maine Revenue Services assesses, a use tax on any out-of-state aircraft that is flown into Maine. That is not the case. In most situations, nonresidents flying into Maine do not owe the tax and are not at risk of being assessed. There are circumstances where a tax will be due, but that is the exception, not the rule.

Click here for a two-page summary of how the law actually works in this area.
One key thing to remember is that Maine use tax is not even a possibility unless an aircraft comes into Maine within the first 12 months after its purchase by a nonresident. Also, even if the aircraft is present in Maine within the first 12 months for purposes other than repair and maintenance, no Maine use tax is due if a sales or use tax of 5% or more was paid in another state. Finally, even if an aircraft is present in Maine within the first 12 months after its purchase by a nonresident, no use tax is due if the aircraft is here for no more than 20 days during the 12 months following its purchase, exclusive of days during which the aircraft is in this State for the purpose of undergoing "major alterations," "major repairs" or "preventive maintenance" as those terms are described in FAA regulations.

The bottom line is that nonresidents need to plan carefully only if they intend to fly into Maine, and spend more than 20 days in Maine, within one year after the initial purchase of their aircraft and have not paid a sales or use tax on their aircraft in another state. "

I found the Florida law to be more Draconian, with no exclusions within the first 6 months. ( http://tinyurl.com/3d5b87
)

(2) Purchases Outside Florida.

(a) There shall be a presumption that any aircraft, boat, mobile home, motor vehicle, or other vehicle purchased in another state, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia but titled, registered, or licensed in this state is taxable except as otherwise provided in subsection (26) of this rule. This presumption may be rebutted only by documentary evidence that the person owning the aircraft, boat, mobile home, or motor vehicle purchased the aircraft, boat, mobile home, ormotor vehicle in another state, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia six (6) months or more prior to the time it is brought into this state. In order for such property to be presumed exempt as purchased for use outside Florida, the person owning the aircraft, boat, mobile home, motor vehicle, or other vehicle must provide documentary proof that such propert was used in other states, territories of the United States, or the District of Columbia for six months or longer under conditions which would lawfully give rise to the taxing jurisdiction of another state, territory, or District of Columbia and any lawfully imposed tax was paid to such state, territory, or District of Columbia before being imported into this state. However, the rental or lease of any aircraft, boat, mobile home, or motor vehicle which is used or stored in this state is taxable without regard to its prior use or tax paid on the purchase outside this state.

(b) Tax shall apply and be due on any aircraft, boat, mobile home, motor vehicle, or other vehicle imported or caused to be imported from a foreign country into this state for use, consumption, distribution, or storage to be used or consumed in this state. It is immaterial whether such aircraft, boat, mobile home, motor vehicle, or other vehicle was used in another country for a period of six months or more prior to the time it is brought into Florida. Furthermore, tax paid in another country will not be recognized by the State of Florida in arriving at the tax due.

(3) Tax Credit for Purchases Outside Florida.

(a) A credit is allowed to a person who as purchaser provides documentary evidence that a lawfully imposed sales or use tax has been paid to another state, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia on any aircraft, boat, mobile home, motor vehicle, or other vehicle which later becomes subject to Florida tax. The credit shall be the amount of legally imposed sales and use tax paid to another state, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

What's interesting is that the Florida law allows boats a 20 day exemption, as well as other exemptions for fabrication and repair, that they don't offer to aircraft. I suspect that the whole thing violates Federal Law, since the feds frown on restrictions of interstate commerce and travel. However it would cost you big-bucks to get the whole thing clarified.

Deke,

The Florida tax thing is far fetched. I've been reading the ANN and trying to follow the story of the Florida tax. I finally got fed up with the accusations and obvious attempt to destroy SNF, so being a concerned Florida resident I called the Florida Department of Revenue this morning and talked (first hand) to Curt, who Campbell quoted. The bottom line is there is 'some' truth to what Campbell is reporting, but is it the whole truth? According to Curt, the FL DOR is not out to get anyone. As I understand it, the tax they are trying to collect is on aircraft that are owned by Florida residents and registered is some other place with no tie to that State, such as Delaware (where there is no tax(?),) but the aircraft primarily used in Florida. This is an obvious attempt by someone to avoid paying the Florida sales tax. Also, this is pretty much aimed at new aircraft, i.e. an aircraft less than 6 months old. The FL DOR is not running around checking every N number. Most of the high profile cases are initiated by the tax departments of other states alerting Florida to the situation. (That alone is scary. The states Tax departments talking to each other.) Certainly he couldn't give me details about the cases, but it sure sounds like FL is doing their job and it's getting blown out of proportion.

If someone wants to come here for SNF and is worried about this, don't take my word for it, call Curt yourself and get the assurances you need to feel good. Here is FL DOR number: 1-850-487-3273.

By the way, with regard to Revolution helicopters, I think Campbell, despite his many peculiarities, did the aviation community a service. He brought together many government and industry folks and placed them in a forum where they could discuss the issues surrounding that company's product. I was there and as much as I don't really want to, I'll give him his due, he hosted and funded that effort, which was totally objective and not distorted by him. Simultaneously another effort was underway that was more official. If I remember they both reached similar conclusions. Ultimately, Revolution sank on it's own.

As for SNF, Campbell has a long standing feud with SNF that started long before John Burton took it over. I know John and he is honest as the day is long, as is assistant, Wayne Boggs. I would always trust those guys. As for Jim Campbell, it all depends which Jim shows up. One is very good at what he does and the other is off the wall and you need to watch your 6, if you know what I mean.

Hope to see you at SNF.

Thanks Rick. Good research. That should give some closure to this.

Sorry to be gone so long... a second thread was started on this topic and so I didn't get an email notifying me of activity!

The SNF ultralight area (Paradise City) is now the current home of the Light Sport Aircraft. Most of the LSA demo’s etc are done from there. Interesting combo of UL and LSA. I have never read where there are restrictions as to what can or can not land in the UL area. My plane is more than capable of take-off/landing on their runway (better than most of the LSA’s). I would not recommend flying a conventional GA plane in there! Depending on what/who is flying, you need to be able to slow down to at least 50 MPH in the pattern. Fortunately the approaches for UL 9 & 27 are good…just a short final!

From the Homebuilt Camping area to the showers is about an 8 minute walk. From the UL area it is about 2 minutes…not a big deal one way or the other. From the UL area you are very close to the UL runway and can watch flight-ops from your tent. Also, usually more grass there! …less dust! The tram is only a minute or two away.

I’m glad the pictures (on the original post/thread) helped. The NOTAM, printed arrival info for the UL area is really poor. I will probably address that this year.

Update on our SNF plans. We will depart Mobile, AL Thursday afternoon 4/10/08, and fly to Quincy, FL (2J9) northwest of Tallahassee and spend the night. Hotel is about a mile from the airport...not a bad walk! Depart early Friday morning for the last leg to SNF.

Again, we will be landing/camping in the UL area. Just look for "Hotel Vixen!" (picture attached).

Let's try to get a fix on exactly who is going to be there! ...Hope we're not alone!
