Greetings,

Annual time and thought since i was getting pretty high EGT's over the
winter that i would investigate settings.
Ranch altitude is 2000 and i have 165 main jets in my bing 582. My
clips are set on third notch.
Any slight deceleration from my typical cruise of 5900 sends the EGT's
to 1230 unless i add power or during landing config lower the RPMs to
the low range.

Been flying too long without change and have forgotten all the good advice.
Tips?

I would simply move to the 4th clip position and see. As the warmer temps approach( - well they're suppose to be coming!) you'll have to go back to the 3rd of even 2nd clip position depending on density altitude. In this area, 850msl temps 20-90, I vary between between 3rd & 4th with 165 jet. I try to see 1100ish at 5800 rpm (suppose to be the leanest rpm). I wait until it changes by about 40-50 degrees before I change to the other clip position.

Larry... great common sense response.
Just when i thought the snow and cold was over...winter returns so maybe have to try the 4th clip.
I have just never heard anyone say 4th clip is do able.
What color are your plugs and does your engine smoke much?
Mine does during startup for sure but not sure during flight or after its warmed up.

thanks for the tips... i'm not an expert either... obviously.

I smoke on start too, but I'm inverted so always have some oil/gas in the plug on start up. My plugs are a grey color, depending on the time of year and when I pull them. I do have to look past the black from taxi in. I know I should shut her down and see, but I haven't seen the need when I look at the rings and piston head. I found moving a clip position changes the EGT about 50F. You may want to set your cruise rpm and mark the throttle at that position. Then look at the needle/jet relationship with the throttle set to that cruise rpm position. You will probably find that the needle is still in the jet and therefore clip position would influence.

First question is what do your plugs look like ?

With Stock rotax exhaust i run 3 rd notch spring, summer and fall. Winter time I go to 4th notch, about 10 to 15% more fule and lower EGTS.

1200 F in cruise i find is ok by my gauges leaving me with a sandy brown plug. Member those guages are calibrated for 75F so at 25 F your EGT will show 1250F and really the same as in summer at 1200 F when OAT is 75F .

Also what is your prop set like for RPM ?
WIDE OPEN THROTTLE ?
STATIC On the ground
Prop pitch has alot to do with EGTs as well.

Dave,

They are tan actually but i have not done a true test where i killed
power at cruise and landed and pulled a plug.
But no carbon build up.

I'ts warming up and all of the high EGT's were in cold winter so i
guess i may be about right now.
I always worry about any numbers over 1200. i have my red light
blinking at me if i get one over 1200.
I'd never let it go to 1250 but only because of book specs from rotax.

I have a 3 blade wharp that full open and level flight i get 6250 so it
is set more for cruise than climb.
6000 on the ground.
