How highly stressed is the leading edge tube on a Kolb?
Tonight I noticed that there's a dent in the leading edge of my
UltraStar. It's old, I don't know how I never noticed it before, but it's
maybe 1/8" deep and maybe 1 inch by 1½ inches. I peeled the old repair
patch off of it and looked at the tube underneath... no sharp bent edges,
no cracking or anything. Its right at the first full rib inboard of the
lift strut attach point, and (as far as I can tell by looking in from the
wing root) no problem with the rib. The leading edge is still straight,
except for the dent.
Should I be concerned? Is there a good way to reinforce it without
replacing the entire leading edge tube (a major job)?

I saw a guy that had a dent in a wing strut tube on a Ultralight I let him use my small exhaust pipe expanding tool to push the dent back out he just slipped it in the tube with a long extension and then tightened it up then loosen it up and retrieved it back with a magnetic stick ,this is just an idea use with caution

Might work on something like a Quick where everything is bolted together, just remove the bolts and slip it in. Wouldn't work on a Kolb where all the ribs are riveted to the leading edge. Plus I'd need about an 8' extension...

it will work on that leading edge tube the expander is only 1"OD your leading edge tube on a KOLB is big enough even with rivets in it and if you hang the leading edge down as in the folded position and a hand full of extensions you could take the dent out or just not worry about it again Just a suggestion

The dent is only cosmetic, but there is a nice way to fix it. Order PolyFiber Super Fill. Remove the leading edge finishing tape and apply the mixed Super Fill over the dented area. Apply more than is needed (see pictures), then sand it to contour with the tube. Be careful to sand in small steps using a light-grade sandpaper. Sand a little and use a rule along the leading edge to check it. It sands very nice. I didn't have to use any template or anything, just eyeballed it. Reapply new finishing tape, dope, paint, and the dent is completely gone like it was never there.

I'm not worried about cosmetics, only strength. Furthermore I wouldn't
patch _any_ questionable area; I want to be able to inspect it later and
make sure there's no further problems.
If it were a Quicksilver where the leading edge IS the spar, of course, the
wing would already be disassembled.

It depends on the size of the dent. If it's small, it's only cosmetic and the strength is still there.

The leading edge of a Kolb wing is not acting as a spar as it is on many other types of planes. On a Quicksilver, a dent there would be very bad... On a Kolb, what you describe sounds like no problem at all.
