After starting this project from a tail kit, I decided to switch to scratch building. I remember hearing Mark Townsend say “scratch build because you love building. Don’t scratch build to save money. If you do, you will go nuts!” Well, truer words have never been spoken. This scratch building thing is for people with more patients than me. Also, I have decided I really want a float plane. I am going to purchase a kit that is a little better suited to that.

If you want a big jump on scratch building, let me know. I have the following and more:

• Corvair engine core – inspected by William Wynne at Corvair day at the Zenith factory. He said it looks good but it needs a valve job.
• Corvair motor mount – purchased from William Wynne at Corvair day.
• Empennage assembled from Kit
• Almost all sheet metal parts. Most parts already cut out and formed.
• Forming blocks.
• Corvair conversion manual.
• Zenith Zodiac 601XL plans.
• Homebuilt help scratch building basics DVD.

You really only need the extruded aluminum and a lot of patience to build this airframe. If you are really interested, contact me off list at johnrhines(at)gmail.com. I have some pictures on my website at www.johnsplane.com or I can send you more detailed pics.

Thanks,
John

Guys,

I have had a bunch of people ask if I would sell the engine mount by its self. I would prefer to sell if all together. If I can't i may consider it and I will let you all know.

Thanks,
John

Bill, anybody can get a Jab engine mount. To get a Corvair one takes skill and/or patience.

Gig, you are probably correct, but who would really want one? I once had a Corvair in 1968. It was green and I abandoned it on the side of the road in Tennessee. I suppose it's still there? I certainly would never consider flying behind one and as poorly as they perform I don't ever expect to. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Holy Moley Bill!!

The Corvair engine sitting in your old green car and what ends up mounted to the firewall are two different things - AFTER the engine gets a case-up rebuild with a long list of modifications.

In fact, I was so impressed with the engine in its aviation form that I picked the engine FIRST, and THEN went looking for an airframe to stick behind it.

Currently there's a whole mess of 'em flyin' around in all sorts of airframes. And the development of refinements keeps going on and on.

Take a gander at kitplanes.com, go to the blog, and see for yourself just how purty these little powerplants have become.

"...but who would really want one?" Your puttin' us on, right?

Not on your tintype, Gig!

At least not until I get some gold parts, too! Everyone knows they go faster.

Rick, I suppose I'm just so soiled and jaded from 130 hours of flying my Jab 3300 powered XL. Not worrying about 40 year old crank breaking, or my one spark plug per jug fowling out or the weak oil pump pushing enough lube to the top end side in a long turning bank and frying a valve or two, or simple metal fatigue from the stress to the case of too few and too small main bearings just to name a few. No, I really am a little "e" in Experimental kind of guy. I also prefer an engine I don't have to worry much about, no oil leaking out the bottom and starts when it's supposed to. On the other hand, I applaud folks that seek ways to recycle and conserve. And I'm happy for and admire folks that have a cause and diligently stick with it no matter what. Though I have met a couple fellows who had Corvair engines in the 601s and could not get to 120 and were disappointed and replaced them with other power. Course, that could be abnormal. No, on the whole I just look at flying differently than you all do, but I will defend your right to that difference. Oh, by the way, I have an extra 3300 mount for a XL when your interested. Best regards, Bill

Damn straight gold is faster. And our noise bowls look better.

I got my cowling from WW yesterday and I can't remember of the top of my head who the guy is that is building them for him but the workmanship is as close to perfect as any I've seen. It's going to look out of place on my 601.

I have an early nose bowl, Gig, that has some layup voids on the mounting flange. Not really a structural or strength issue, but it still bugs me a bit.

I'd be more than happy to trade straight across so you can maintain the correct look of your 601. And best of all, it's got red paint everywhere!

You can thank me later.

While the nose bowl also looks better than most of the rest of my airframe I was talking about the aluminum work cowling that looks so much better than my work that it makes me sad.

Rick, is your nose bowl the one piece or the 2 piece? I love my two piece and couldn't find any voids in it and I looked real hard because the box that it came in was trashed by DHL and I figured what ever was in it had to be screwed up.

Now the only thing that makes me nervous is cutting out the holes for the prop and the air intake. Same goes for the required cuts on the FP-13 spinner I got from Van's.

Any hints will be appreciated.
