Hello,
I am here regretfully to state that I will be unable to use my VISA card to renew membership in the Europa Club – and thus achieve quick and painless extention to my membership. The reason is a new request of me to utilize something called a “Verify by VISA” so-called service.
This service claims to provide additional security by my providing personal information above and beyond that required to get the card (which I have had since its first day in operation). In the Conditions prescribed in the small print is the terribly necessary agreement to permit “various messages of information” from ‘third parties’, the like of which I already suffer from previous scams – and I am no longer willing to suffer these – nor do I see how these improve any security for either myself nor the trader.
So it seems the only method open in spite of all the precautions I (and a myriad of large institutions) have taken, is to revert to HM the post office, which (a) will delay my subscription and thus the use of the funds, (b) will add to the expense (only slightly) and (c) thwart the demands of some upwardly-enthusiastic second-class minor executive. If he/she were to fully explain who these mysterious third parties were and honestly reveal the personal details to which they deserved knowledge, I might be tempted to agree.
So, sorry, my delayed renewal (because of the late Flyer) comes across by paqueboat perhaps, but not at the speed of light. If I’m ‘way off base, let me know how.
Cheers, Ferg [quote][b]

Ferg,

Thanks for the remainder, i was in the process of forgetting to renew. Also my card payment diverted to "verified by", which brought me to my banks authorization page, and upon entering my password there, approved the transaction. Nothing special, just added security.
If this card would have been stolen or borrowed it would have been useless for this transaction. It's not the club or it's handling agent who imposes the extra layer, it is you who have agreed to extra security somewhere in the process of renewing your card. If you are getting "funny" questions, i would immediately contact the bank and the credit card company. And have your computer scanned for back doors and spy ware.

Regards,

Jos Okhuijsen

Ferg - you've obviously missed the considerable publicity that most
card issuers have generated about Verified by Visa (and other similar
schemes such as 3D Secure). Maybe you binned some fancy colour
leaflets that came along with your monthly statement?

You'll probably find that soon you won't be able to do much online
shopping without these extra layers of security. If you haven't
already set it up, the first time afer your particular card issuer
goes live with it, you'll probably get vectored off to do the setup
stuff before you can complete the purchase, unless you have
deliberately done the setup already, like it said in the glossy
leaflet earlier.

Please note that you can't renew (or join) by snail-mail unless you
remit in UK funds (pounds sterling) and the Club can now only accept
card payments on the website (for reasons explained in tooooo much
detail over several memsec columns in the newsletter).

Sorry for the extra few minutes it will take people to go through the
security hoops. The timing of the implementation is up to individual
card issuers so not everyone may see the security stuff immediately.

regards

Rowland

To Jos and Rowland, Thank you.
I appreciate that you have taken time to respond, and I quite agree with you that added security is a good and necessary thing. Signing credit card authorization receipts which have many of the cards’ numbers blanked out was an Improvement – but is still the source of theft when not so treated, - was one improvement, the three-figure number on the back was another.
….and I suppose the extra security steps in this latest attempt are a third. However the previous two did not require that I agree to be the subject of “various items of news and developments from time to time” (or words to that effect). I find that to be an open and indefensible clause which guarantees no security whatsoever.
That was not mentioned in the replies but I feel it needs to be. There is a limit to what the credit card can be made to do – just as there is one to email. It cannot be made imperative, no matter what the banks and financial institutions try to impose control.
I regard the use of the card as an even trade – my dollars (or whatever) for their goods – not a great privilege, nor an immense favour – but an even trade. The early propaganda was that the card would increase casual and easy spending and so the merchants should be pleased to play. Nevertheless there are many merchants in North America who refuse to accept the card because they now must pay a greater percentage than when they began. I cannot blame them.
When they rescind the blackmail of forcing me to receive their offal, I will recant – unless of course they sign an agreement to accept mine – otherwise it is no longer an even trade. But I’ve made my arrangements, so the cheque (which is still an approved and legal currency) will arrive in pounds.
….no anger. I still regard my membership in the Club as a vital adjunct to the build… and it will be for two years.
Happy landings

The thought of you wheeling a bin full of epoxy cups, burned wire,
fiberglass trimmings, and banana peels to the Post Office in order to
fulfill your half of the "even trade" had me giggling, Ferg. Please
have SWMBO take pictures if this ever occurs! Smile

The fine print in the agreements here in the States includes an "Opt
Out" clause by law. We usually have to mail a letter or phone them or
jump through an additional hoop, but this action stops the "third
party" nonsense. Hopefully you can find the same protection overseas.

Good luck!

D
