Nick, Mark, Mike and Pete.
Congratulations to all of you guys for that winning effort. I just wish I could have been there at the awards ceremony with you but I had other obligations that evening. It was great to get the phone call from Nick that evening letting me know what you guys won. Fantastic. From past experience I knew that all the judges initials on your prop card meant that you were in the running. Now Lancair will have to "take notice" of the outstanding product coming out of SYI. Not that you are in the same market segment, but that your quality is now judged to be the "best" of the composite aircraft.

I am guessing that getting your e-mail means you all got back to SYI today. I just got home an hour or so ago. Some light rain, but overall good weather.

Hope to see you all sometime during the first full week in May. I will be at Smyrna for the NIFA contest.

Thanks to those that sent pics!!!!!! I have admired...well actually drooled over this plane for the last 2 years of Sun n Fun. Being a novice pilot with about 150 hours of flying only a cessna 172, my fear is the transition from a yoke to stick. I have been reassured by almost everyone that it is not an issue and will be easy. Can anyone offer some advice on this? I live in SW Florida where the weather makes for ideal flying and I'll be working on my IFR rating this summer if time permits. I'll be using the plane for personal enjoyment flying Florida. Any advice? Thanks. I too hope to become a lightning builder/owner soon!!!

My experience in helping transition from wheel to stick is that after about an hour most people could fly the plane .....but a little rough After about 2 more flights of an hour or so, they did fine. After 4 or 5 hours, the normal pilot skills should be evident.

It is a little like the guy who woke up after brain surgery and asked the Doc, "Will I be able to play the piano?" The doc reasured him that he would be able to. "That's good, because I couldn't play before"

If you were a good pilot before you grabbed the stick, it helps. If you dont fly the 172 well, you wont fly the Lightning well.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

We are just bitter as hell at Green Landings. It was an insider deal. We clearly had the best looking Lightning at the whole damn show. Just ask Buddy!

Pete must have bought off the judges!!




Just kidding.

Our Lightning (Buddy's) generated a lot of interest. We handed out a ton of brochures. We even had the SportStar importer come by and tell us it was a beautiful plane!

Maybe Jim L can share a couple pix of it.

In my unbiased opinion, the two show Lightnings were the best of the breed. At least we flew ours in and out of the 1400' Ultralight field with two people on board. Not too shabby.

Don't fret over the yoke verses stick. I have flown over 100 pilots in my modified Esqual LS. Their experience varied from a low of about 60 hours to retired airline pilots with over 20,000 hours. Most had not flown with at stick. All of them felt comfortable within a minute or two and had no problems making the airplane do what they wanted it to do. Actually the stick is a more natural way to control an airplane as it generally only takes one motion to make it do what you want it to - for example to make a climbing left turn with a yoke it takes a turn of the wheel to the left and a pull aft. The stick only takes a pull to the left rear - only one motion. Once you get used to it (and as I said, it will not take long) you will find it easier to be more precise when using a stick. For example, flying close formation with a yoke is a higher work load than flying formation with a stick. I also think it is easier to feel the need for trim changes when using a stick, but I have no real example as to why I think that - possibly less friction in most stick set ups.
Get some transition time in a Diamond or some sporty aircraft with a stick and you will see what a "non event" the transition is.

Fred,
I brought the first Diamond into our flight school. The instructors were apprehensive about flying a stick. I would take them out and tell them to ride through the first take off with their hand on the stick. At rotate speed I would tell them to rotate gently. I had my hand on the stick all the time. Every one of them did great and within 30 minutes I would have let any of them fly it. We did have to go through some ground school, but the transition is extremely easy. The lightning is a dream to fly also.
