My computer service is screwed up, thanks to AT&T Yahoo switching systems, so these comments are late.
First- Congratulations to Cristal on her first solo in her new toy. Hope you have many joyful and safe flights.
Next- Everybody keep sending the MV photos. I really enjoy seeing places that I will never be able to see in person.
The photo of John in the new Kolb gave a very good look at the new wingtips. Mike- if this is what you are making, good luck. I found your lengthy commentary quite informative. Keep it coming. How are you making the reverse molds exactly, meaning right and left? Templating?
Question- If drooping down helps, what about the air coming off the ends at the top? Would "drooping" both down and up help? I have noticed a lot of winglets(?) on the planes flying over the house. What about the same on a Kolb wing? About the new Kolb- Does it have bosses on the wing ends, to change the wing end style? Comments, anyone?

Thank you Bill and all who have wished me safe and fun flying. I got to fly Tuesday morning and evening also for just a little while. Wind has kicked up too much around here lately...but I can NOT wait to go again! What fun! Think I'll stay away from humid morning flying though...think I may have experienced a little carb ice Tuesday morning. I had reduced the power some to begin a slow decent and then I noticed the RPM going down even more. It did that a couple times. A friend suggested I put Marvel Mystery Oil in my gas...he had heard that helps. I mix my gas and oil (with my new Ratio-rite measuring cup from Spruce), so I wonder if adding Marvel Mystery Oil as well would be ok.

Good friend Bill,

My method for constructing droop tips using urethane carving foam (Aircraft Spruce). Then coat it with that fast-setting joint compound (thanks to whoever suggested the fast setting stuff). The joint compound goes on easily, sand easily, etc. Coat entire surface with epoxy resin, continue dressing up the shape...until it looks pretty good.
My droop tip shapes are just by looking at TNK's, and doing the best I can, measuring for simetry.
After a finished shape is "perfect, or at least "good enough", coat it with two-three layers of carnuba wax, spray on some layers of PVA liquid film, roll on this guy's Gel Coat I suggested.
Wrap the entire outer surface with some fiberglass layers (maybe 6 or so). Wait a day, and voila'!! You have just made a flawless mold for what ever you want to make in fiberglass.

Next, with your mold...3 layers of carnuba wax, again. Then the PVA parting agent spray. Then the Gel Coat, again (maybe 3-4 layers)...then the fiberglass cloth and resin (maybe 3-4 layers). Wait a day..and out pops your finished fiberglass part. If there are areas that are too flexible, then add a couple of additional layers on the inside of the piece.

For something like droop tips, I do NOT recommend making them. I would not go to the trouble, if I could have a set in a couple of days. The only reason I'm making mine is because I need them now. For the time, trouble and material, it is MUCH easier to just buy them from TNK, when they can get them in.

With regard to droop tips going down, and not up. Think about what's actually going on with the air. The air on the underside of the wing is HIGH pressure. As long as you are flying, you want all that high pressure air you can keep, until it passes beyond the back edge of your wing.
The air on top, on the other hand, is LOW pressure. You also want to it stay low pressure, as long as it is above your wing. If the air above your wing wanted to "spill" away, it would only get lower. That's even better. What you would most likely have is air from out past the edge of your wingtip wanting to sneak in to the top low pressure area. Although some of this is happening, I don't think it is nearly as important as the lower surface losing air.

The winglets on the more expensive type of airplanes are for yaw control and stability, if I'm not mistaken. With the raised tail surface alone, some high speed planes don't have enough yaw control. By adding the winglets you now have THREE vertical surfaces to keep the plane from yawing into the incoming slipstream.

With regard to adding droop tips to already finished wings, I have MY opinion how it should be done. You would not alter anything with the finished wing, but, rather, build the droop tip and it's skeleton support around the present wing. Altering the original wing end would only be possible if you haven't covered the wing, yet. BTW, ALL your modifications and changes should be run past TNK for their approval and blessing. I'm only sharing what I have done, and just my opinion, what whatever that's worth...and to some, that ain't much, I'm sure!!
