Hi Jim,
Good luck! I've been researching engines too as I'd like to
re-engine my 582 powered IV. There just isn't anything anywhere near
the performance of a 912. They've got 4 strokes, light weight, and a
geared prop. The next best I've been able to find is the Gemini
diesel. It appears to be 166# installed, 100hp, geared, and runs on
Jet-A, etc. Unfortunately it's new, and costs a lot. From there you
either get really experimental, or really heavy, (or both :'(). And
unfortunately really heavy "doesn't give me the quick takeoff I want
on my short strip with the trees on the end." I have the same
problem. I'm not as concerned with speed as I am with climb, and for
that you want 1) high power / weight; and 2) a big prop. #2 means
either a slow turning engine, (inefficient and heavy,) or a geared
engine, (efficient and somewhat lighter.)
