What condition is it in?
How is the motor?
How did you like flying it?
Does it still meet Part 103 Ultralight specs?

HI Ray.
Jim here.
My UltraStar is in good condition the motor has 175 hrs on a 300 hr rebuild. I have installed a Fire Star nose full instrumentation, ASI dual EGT,CHT,IVSI,ALT, Fuel gauge, slip indicator,Tinny teach, lighted dash. The engine is a Rot ax 503 D.C.SI with a 2.58-1 gearbox turning a 54 in IVO. She has a Quad strobe system (they call me the flying Christmas Tree) She has disc brakes and an unusual differential braking control witch acts as a parking brake. She has 8 inch rims with TUNDRA tires. Some how I have acquired the nickname of the scudd. I have extended the landing gear to give me more prop Clarence but you know how it goes I have increased the prop size to 54 in. ( shouldn't say this but I have done 120 IAS in Straight and level flight not on purpose tho). She is registered as an E.L.S.A and has an airworthiness cert. She will climb at 1000 FPM at 40 Indicated . She fly's like a dream. She has a 9 gallon fuel tank. She cruses at 60-65 at 4700 RPM(what did forget?)?????

An UltraStar with a 503??? Sounds more like a RocketStar! Isn't Vne for the US only 70? But seriously, did you beef it up at all? Funny, just last night I was browsing some archive messages about an early 5 rib FS with a 503, and many were saying it was overloaded and unsafe with that much power. Seems a US would be even more so.

Jim,
The nicest Ultrastar I ever saw was 503 powerd and had beefed up landing gear and I'm sure other mods.
I saw it years ago at a fly in in Eastern Ohio, it was built and owned by a fellow named Tom Tchantz (spelling?) and I think he won a major award at Oshkosh that same summer. He later sold it and I always wonder if its still around. It was a true work of art and every Ultrastar owner shoul get a chance to look it over for ideas.
Should be some nice layouts of it in old EAA rags.

An ultrastar with a 503 is beyond design spec by a lot -- that plane
wasn't even spec'd for a 447. I will acknowledge that a 5 rib original
Firestar wing is not a lot different than a 5 rib Ultrastar wing, but
again, Dennis of old Kolb made a new wing (7 rib) to accommodate the
interest in a 503. But then the E means Experimental, and to each his
own. (Any weight needed on the nose to compensate for a 92 lb engine?)
Then about the 120 indicated, straight and level. Even if the straight
and level was after a fast dive, I just can't fathom anything over 90,
unless the wings were missing at that point. Recall that the ultrastar
is what Dennis flight tested to destruction, in which a wing drag strut
failed coming out of an intentional dive at about 80, and just the dive
(let alone the broken wing) frightened even him in his younger
invincible life.
So, how far from stock are the wings on this thing? Or, am I just
flying my Firestar like a little old lady?

Hi Ben.
I have talked to Homer about this installation at length and he is ok with what I have done I normally cruse at 60 indicated at 4600-4700 rpm. I have had her for 4 years and 100 plus hours a season I need to move up to an all season plane. The 120 was done half way down the 2800 ft runway at 20 foot off the deck just after taking off I didn't do it on purpose just forgot to throttle down after take off.
Thanks Jim
