John,
I agree the Kolb fits our needs better, but your description brought back
memories of the Vampire when it first came out in the early eighties. I
always thought it would become a lot more popular than it did, but it will
never match a Kolb for off airport opps.

Denny
PS: I hope they get their crap together and have some success with the
Vampire as it is a very interesting a bird that has never seemed to fulfill
its potential.
What engine did they have on it at Lakeland John?

Quote:
Yes, there was a single and a two place in the UL area at Lakeland this
year.

The two place flew once during the week. Was roughly built and
underpowered. Barely got out of 1500 feet of sod.

I remember when Sadler introduced the single place many years ago.

I'll stick to my tried and true Kolb.

I don't know. I was not interested enough in it to inquire. The two place
looked really shabby.

Not John, but I'll answer. They were running some sort of rotary
engine...dual rotor. I never saw them fly it...it looked real heavy
(and rough as John mentioned) and not much wing. Was one of those
examples of a company I'd never write a check to. If they are so short
of capital that they can't make a decent looking demo plane, I fear for
getting what I pay for. That being said, I've always thought the
Vampire (single place) was a very interesting design.

An example of what you can accomplish with a pusher prop:

This is "laminar magic" certified record holder with a
single boom, pusher engine. 25 hp, 498 lbs gross (including pilot)
126.7 MPH
Note Steve Wittman wingtips
BB

Not much room for camping gear though John.

I think the Vampire had a Rotomax 2 rotor Wankel in it. 110 or 120 horsepower (at) WOT. It was certainly not an airframe i would have taken to an airport, let alone S-n-F.

It had a Rotomax 2 rotor charge-cooled rotary engine, rated at around
120 hp. They supposedly had a 1 rotor in the single-seat, but it was
still on the roof of their trailer when I visited.

The guy I talked to knew very little about the engine, & not much more
about a/c design (he tried to tell me that the 2-seat with 120 HP was
good for up to a 1000 hp V8 (not a typo) that would 'blow away anything
else out there'.

The 1 rotor engine might be worthy of consideration for UL type planes;
it's around 60 hp & should be almost as light as a 2 stroke with the
same or slightly better fuel burn. I tried talking to the Rotomax
people, but the only guy in the tent at the time was their gyro pilot.
All he knew was that the 2 rotor made plenty of power for the 2 seat
gyro he flew. The engines are descended from the OMC snowmobile/outboard
rotaries.
