Hi all, I've been doing some research into what engine to use in my 4 Classic project. I am planning to keep the plane as light as possible. I do want to go with a 4 stroke engine, but am not going to spend the $20,000 or so it will cost to put a new 80 HP Rotax in it. In checking on the net, it seems that the Subaru with a redrive, and also the Geo 4 Cylinder will both weigh in at very nearly 200 lbs flying weight. I'm begining to wonder, why not use an 85 HP Continental, even hand prop it to loose the starter and heavy battery. It seems from my limited research that the Continental flying weight is just a bit less than 200 lbs. I'm sure I'm missing something, but what is it. As far as the Jabiru goes, I allready have one on my Avid MK IV and while it cruises just fine, that small prop doesn't give me the quick takeoff I want on my short strip with the trees on the end. Actually the 582 that was on the plane before did at least as good if not just a bit better in getting the plane over those trees. Fire away!! LOL Thanks, Jim Chuk Avids Kitfox Mn

I think what you are missing is the price of a new
Continental. You can get a used/rebuilt Continental but the same is true
for the Rotax. When it came down to it I chose a stratus Subaru because of
price and I did not like the reliability of the Rotax.

Thanks to all that replied to my questions, as far as the price of a Continental engine, I wouldn't concider new, don't think you could buy a new 85 HP anyway. Seems like I do see them for somewhere around $5000 and up used. I guess that the question is still there, Why not use them? If cost isn't the issue, are they way to heavy for the power they produce? In reality, does the Subaru that claims 100 HP with a redrive produce any more power than that 85 Continental? Hope I'm not being a pain in the rear! Thanks, Jim Chuk Avids Kitfox 4 Mn
