I have no idea how, why, or even IF the wings fold up on the 601 XL. But
it's the dominant subject on this builders newsgroup. I'm not suggesting it
shouldn't be but since Zenith has walked away from ALL their previous ideas
and designs. The CH100, CH-200, CH-300 etc. How long will it be be before
this question simply sinks the whole 601XL line?
I actually like the olders designs better, the 601 HD is my favorite. Those
thick, thick wings skip through turbulant air with very little bumping.

I have been flying a 601HD for 3 years with 300hrs now. It is not smooth in turbulent air. In fact I get bounced around pretty good in turbulent air. Probably due to the fact that is is a high lift wing and a light airplane. Now the HDS wing is probably smoother but it has its trade offs too. Overall, the 601HD is a solid airplane and fun to fly...

Hi John,
What do feel are the trade-offs of the HDS vs the HD?

Hi Al
I would say the biggest trade off would be climb performance. The HD wing also probably has a little more glide to it. One other thing would be horsepower. With the HD the 80hp 912 works really well but in the summer at higher density altitudes, performance with 80hp and HDS wings would be a little anemic. I have not flown an HDS so these comments are coming from other HDS fliers who I have talked to when I was considering changing my HD to an HDS. Most agreed that the HDS is better with at least 100hp.

I learned many years ago that the quality that controls an airplane's
response to turbulent air is wing loading. The higher the wing
loading, the lower the response to turbulence. This would make the
HDS better in rough air than the HD. It also makes jet fighters much
better for flying in rough air than Piper Cubs.

Hi John,
I have an HDS with about 350 HRS. and a 3300 Jabiru engine. I friend of mine has an HD with a Corvair. He said to me a couple of times that he wishes his would climb like mine does. The thing is that he is not comparing apples to apples. I have 120 HP-- he has 100 HP. My empty weight is 705#'s--his is 780+#'s. I think you are right about the ride in rough air. My HDS rides a little smoother, but if is turbulent you still get bounced around . At gross weight of 1200#'s my Vy is 1100 FPM and Vx is 925 FPM. If I am alone it will climb about 1200 FPM or a little more. There is also a speed difference. I will cruise at 125 MPH (at) 2800 RPM and he cruises at around 90 MPH. We flew from Oshkosh to Open Hangar Days at Zenith. It took him an extra 1 1/2 HRS. He said he might be looking for a set of HDS wings if someone would like to trade. I don't know what he would see for cruise speed and climb rate with the shorter wings, but it would be interesting to see. He still has to remember he has more weight and less HP. I think HP is the big thing with my plane. I fly into some very short grass fields.
I feel the same way about my plane as you do about yours--It is a solid airplane and fun to fly.
Happy flying,
AL from Oshkosh

I found the ride in an HD to be fairly smooth. There's so many variables of course but I found it a refreshing ride. Now if only there were some way to enjoy the wonderful view that bubble affords without baking!

Keep adding vents until you are comfortable. I've got the factory NACA and I'm going to install Vista Vents as well. I'm willing to bet I'll hae to add more down here in South Arkansas.

I have two large vents from Vans and a Koger Sunshade. I also have a folding link to keep the canope slightly open when I taxi. When you are in the air get some altitude and it is nice and cool.
