Hi,
Well I have finally breathed the last of the paint fumes again. Perhaps this headache will finally go away. My mask leaks when I wear my glasses and I can't see very well without them, therefore the 50 foot paint job. Looks pretty good at 50, but the flaws show up when you get closer. Not to mention its too darned dark in the hanger. What ever! It is kinda straight and is recovered, and repainted and now it has wheels and legs that will not let me down again. Not to say that I can't screw it up but at least it won't be because a part let me down. Now I need to get the instruments back in and hooked up so that I can do some tests and find out how it performs with longer legs. I am sure happy with the alignment this time. I set a bit of toe in on my last legs and when I pulled it backwards out of the hanger they would spread and it was hard to pull. Forward it caused the legs to stand up more. This time I set them straight, and during the axle change found that the brake drums were dragging on the backing plate for the shoes. Now it pushes both directions so easy and seems to track straight as well. I had to really push it to get the painting done. The weather here has been really iffy at best. Just a few days every now and then that were warm enough to paint. Today was about 75 so I really pushed the envelope a lot. There was a high wind warning today as well, tomorrow will be the start of a downward trend that will take us down to the 50's for a week or so. Hopefully the weather will get it over with and be nice for a change.

Larry C:
Good for you.
Did you get any hawk or falcon feathers in the paint?
Must be this Spring weather. I got some work done on my bird and have a bit more tuning, maintenance, and cleanup to do before I am ready to fly West.
Yesterday I replaced the original 912 tach, after 14 years and 2,500+ hours. It was worn out. Still operational, but the innards were worn loose as a goose. The new tach is nice and smooth operating, with a good dampening system. Did a tach check on the new one and it was right on with my little GloBee prop tach check meter. I picked up the prop tach from an RC dealer some years ago for about 25.00.
I also replaced an hour meter I purchased from Aircraft Spruce when I installed the new 912ULS last year. It wasn't what I thought it was or wanted but did not have time to get another. Darn thing was ugly, but operated ok. I started a search for VDO hour meters and found one on Ebay for 20.00. I took a few days to run it forward to 186 hours, then stuck it in the MKIII. The new hour meter with Caterpiller yellow logo looks great.
I haven't flown the MKIII since my return from London in March. It is covered with barn dust and bug crap. The carpenter bees have been hard at work trying to cut the hanger down. The 912 needs a carb sync and the Warp Drive needs a little pitch removed. We had the prop set light on the new factory MKIIIx. It climbed at 5400 and leveled out at 5500 rpm. After an oil and filter change, a little flight testing and pilot reorientation, I'll be good to go.
Times a wasting. Two weeks until departure for MV.

Gang,
things seem kind of slow, so here are the pictures of Dart. ( should rename her to Phoenix, she has risen from the ashes three times now) As you can see the new steel legs make her stand up a bit. Her flight characteristics seem to be the same. I intend to try to be a bit more careful in the future. At least I can be sure that the legs and axles won't fail me any more, but then again as I recall there was some problem with a loose nut on the stick. :-/

Looks good from here, and I'm only 3 feet away from the screen. Those streamlined legs?Even though wheel pants LOOK dandy, streamlining legs will reduce drag as much and all you need
is a couple pieces of sheet metal.

Keep it up.
Looks like you are getting good at building FS's.
Looks good.
Have you flown it yet.

Yes, I have flown it twice, no problems, no difference other than being a bit higher up in the air when I touch down.

Looks good Larry! I will be taking lots of pictures of your gear legs when I get there.
I did the break-in procedure on the 503 today and did 6 touch and goes with long full power climbs. Brought it home, took off the cowl and re-torqued the head bolts. I also installed the carb kits and rechecked the fan belt tension. Things look good for the Rock House trip. I'll try to put in a couple of hours of airtime tomorrow in close proximity to the airport. I hadn't flown in almost two months, a record for me since the first flight of my firestar.
