Hello RV Listers!
Well, after quite a hiatus, I'm back on my RV-4 project. This year marks the 20th year since its beginning, and I'm thinking that that its time to finally see it to completion!
The options have changed quite a bit since I started the project, and the latest iteration has a 180HP and a Hartzell CS prop. I had already mounted the battery in the normal spot up by the firewall between the pilot's legs. With all the extra weight up front, I'm sure I'll have to relocate the battery behind the cabin somewhere. Of note, however, is that I have electric trim installed in the Elevator, and the full-swivel tailwheel fork, both of which add some weight to the far aft location.
I would appreciate some feedback on selecting an exacting location for the battery given my situation. Also, what gauge battery cables to use given the remote location.
Its great to be back on the project; I'm looking forward to getting back into the discussions on the List!
Thanks for the help!
Matt Dralle

My -4 has a stock 0-360 with a fixed (max cruise pitch) and a large auto battery up front. It flies fine solo with full tanks but is still real easy to load to max aft CG unless careful. There was a time when I thought a 200hp would be nice but over the years of cleaning things up, tuning, and adjusting rigging etc it pushes the envelope already. Sometimes indicate 220mph S&L on low density altitude days. Still climbs at 3000fpm+ solo and sometimes see 4000 on half tanks. BTW, I bought the plane used about 12 years ago with the 0-360 and wood prop. It was a pig back then and was lucky to see 185mph.

What type of prop are you using, and do you know the pitch? I have a 4 with a 180 as well and am do a prop swap.

It is a Sensenich fixed metal (no RPM limitations). The final thing (internal engine component balancing) had the engine over reving the factory recommended limits so I had it repitched. I would have to look it up but I know it is 1" less than maximum allowable (they will know). If I had to do it again I would go to the max. When it comes time to replace the cylinders I will probably go with flow matched which could conceivably move the RPM up again. Climb RPM went down to 2300 max but the climb rate hasn't seemed to change. Launch is slower but unless you operate from 1000' strips it shouldn't be a factor.

Moving my Odessey PC680 to the firewall was a home run on my 170HP 0-320/MT Fixed Pitch RV4. Moved the CG fwd and left room in the center console for a glove box. Also started much better. Having flown many RV4's (10 in my F16 squadron alone)with every engine and prop combo, I always recommend pitching the prop for max RPM at SL full throttle. I tried alot of props over 12 years, Sensy metal, Warnke, Catto, Hertzler,Sterba, Performance). MT really does their homework and makes a decent FP prop that is light and strong and matched my engine perfectly.Vetterman 4 pipe exhaust and flowing helps, electronic ignition as well along with hotter plugs, (Champion REM 37BY) and Auto Denso L-14U (EIgn) are my favorites...
