It is with real regret that Kay and I are cancelling the 2008 (what
would have been the tenth annual) Kitfox Fly-in and BBQ. The
problem? California's litigious climate and other factors. Thanks to
the Arlington jury award of several years ago. Insurance is simply
not available and the new trend is for medical insurers to go after
hosts of events for cost reimbursements in the case of illness or
injury. We have not worried about our friends, but we worry greatly
about third parties with financial considerations dictated by CFOs
and Corporate attorneys (Not guys and gals with Kitfoxes with big
grins on their faces).
We are sad. We have many fond memories of the good times and good
folks we have met who have become good friends over the
years. Golden West has approached us in the past and encouraged us
to use their venue for our event. That may work in the future if
there is sufficient interest, but definitely not this year.
Our sincere apologies for the late announcement, but we have been
beating the bushes and hoping and have simply run out of time.

Sorry to hear that, Lowell and Kay, via Guy. But I understand about
the "litigious climate." We'll just have to think of other ways to
get together....Oshkosh comes to mind....

Please also convey my best sympathy to Lowell and Kay, Guy. I have been thinking about them lately and wished to have some news. I understand perfectly their situation and if I was to end in such a situation they are, I don't know if I would have enough energy to continue thinking of a Kitfox. Perhaps time will arrange things. Right now, I am thinking to put my life long sailing experience behind me and that's hard enough.
Best regards,

It is sad to hear that your event has been canceled. Another option you
might consider for next year is to team up with an EAA chapter as the EAA
will cover the insurance. There are some rules to follow but for the
insurance it is a really good tradeoff .

Final Stats: for the Labor Day Fly-in
Lynn,
Another great opportunity for us Kitfox guys to get together is at the Factory fly-in in September. Seems an ideal place for a bunch of Kitfox guys to enjoy the atmosphere, share stories and have a good time. I posted the details from last years fly-in below. This was the first year for the fly-in so it should only get larger.
40 Aircraft total
33 Kitfox's
over 80 people
2 new Airworthiness inspections - Tom Wolfe and Mark Smith
2 First Flights - Tom Wolfe and Mark Smith
Kitfoxer's from UK and Russia were here.
Farthest flown Kitfox was Rocky & Denise Whitman from Wimberley Texas.. approximately 50 miles SSE of Austin Texas.
My 7 should be flying by then so I am planning on attending. I would be nice to start putting names to faces.

What if a bunch of us just decided as individuals to show up to Cameron on
the same day. Would there be liability issues that way?

I would not likely have made it anyway, but I understand the insurance
problem. I was once part of a loose group of dual sport motorcyclists
who got together in Moab every year to meet, ride and BS over 3-4 days.
In a few years it built into a group of over 40 participants and we had
organized it into an event with catered dinners and prize giveaways.
There was a small local motorcycle shop run by a single owner/employee
who was on our email group and supported the event. Since we were
riding in groups to different trails on National park land the Park
Service became aware and contacted the organizer with the requirement of
event insurance costing over $2000. This whole thing is much like our
Kitfox group. We had no organization, no elected leaders or any kind of
dues. It's just an email group so we had no funds to support insurance
plus it just wasn't worth the insurance cost since there was no profit
to cover that expense. What we did was lower our profile and not have
more than about 6 bikes ride together through the Park gates at one time.
It's sad that this sort of thing can spoil a gathering, but I think it
can be done with another approach to the way the event is put together.
Maybe like Pete suggests a bunch just happened to show up the same day.
What were the odds?

Good post Rex. Lots of stuff to think about. Too bad about Lowell's flyin
though. I'm on the wrong end of the country so I was unable to attend any
of them, but it's still a loss to me knowing that it won't be there anymore,
nor will I be able to read all the emails about how it went, and also the
photos of those who attended. I do understand Lowell's predicament though.
It gets to where you're almost afraid to let someone drive into your
driveway anymore. Damn shame.
