Hello Everyone,
I've just received my set of drawings for a plans-built 701, and I have my first few (of many) questions already...
I'm trying to plan ahead and see that the wing spar caps are .093" thick, 90-degree extrusions. None of the common (and economical) sources sell 3/32" thick (.0938) 90-degree extrusions called for in the plans. What are all you scratch builders using for wing spar caps? I presume that the answer is 1/8" (.125) thick extrusion with an appropriate-length solid rivet.
Speaking of aluminum, what is the most economical source for 6061 T6? Wicks is the cheapest I've found so far, with Airparts, Inc. coming in a close second. Are there any other sources that might be cheaper?
Finally, what is the longest part I'll have to bend on a brake? I've scanned the plans and think it's the horizontal stabilizer rear spar (at) 2220mm (7'-04" or so). Are there any pieces longer than this that will need to be bent in a brake?
Thanks,
--Mark

Mark, Trident Metals and Yarde Metals are both Industrial Metal houses
with large stocks and several warehouses, I've ALWAYS found metal cheaper
there. They have sheet as well.
The .093 is a special Zenith extrusion available only from them, as far as
anybody has discovered to date. Weight penalty using the 1/8" is about 4#
and price savings of $300 last time I figured it. Zenith approves the
substitution.
The longerons are a little longer but only if you want to bend them full
length instead of splicing them as in the plans.
John
