I've been thinking a lot about the eventual flight testing of my 701. I know, its still a long way off. But how did all of you do the testing and what issue did you find?
Thanks
Kevin
I had three things on my initial flights.
|
1. Water temps were high. I had to cut the cowling three times in
order to bring the temps down. It now stays in the 230 F range. I
still need to close the gaps around the radiator and the cowl.
2. The plane initially was nose heavy. Based on information from this
list, I straightened the trailing edge of the elevator and now it flies
at 80 mph hands off with no trim.
3. I had a slight left turn that was easily remedied.
If you can, take a demo flight somewhere. I went to Quality Sport
Planes in Cloverdale, CA and took a ride. This gave me the confidence
to do the initial test flight. As others have stated, it is easy to fly
but is a little sensitive until you get used to it.
My initial flight was only once around the pattern and then landing. I
now have 10 hours in the plane and love it!

For me the pitch nose up change at takeoff and power setting vs. elevator authority on landing had to be learned with anticipation. This is a designed in effect of having the high mounted elevator to make use of the propwash and I don't consider it a problem just a factor to be ready for. Its very forgiving even in one of my dumber moments lifting off in a quartering tailwind before I had rudder control I kept the nose low while being drifted towards the fence until proper flying speed was there.
The best first flight video is here. Non 701 pilots may need counseling to watch. Its a reasonably accurate representation of the direct handling available.
