Because of time constraints at OSH there will be little or most likely no time to practice the formation "50" once we arrive at OSH. Therefore those planning to fly in the show but not show up to West Bend for practice (right now there are only 12 signed up and we need 31) you need to practice prior to OSH.
A "line abreast" position is needed for both numbers. Line abreast is not hard to fly - just different from what we've always done. You simply line your wing's spar line, and line it up with your leads. The distance between aircraft is one wing span.
You judge this distance by using the leading edge and trailing edge of your wing tip. At the proper distance and line up - the leading edge of your wing tip will line up with the very forward base of the windshield. The trailing edge of the wing tip will line up at the juncture of the vertical stabilizer's leading edge and the fuselage.
You can see pictures of those points on page 15 of the Winter issue of the Red Alert.
There are quite a number of RPA clinics all fired up around the country prior to OSH. This is a good time to practice line abreast, or just take of couple of flight with your local fellow RPA people and practice it.
Things are coming to fruition for the OSH blast. But we need to look good out there and a little practice is all it takes.
