Gang:

I am ready to install the carpeting in the baggage compartment of my 601XL. It is cut and trimmed to fit, but I am unsure of the best way to keep it in place. Options I have thought of are:

[1] spray glue
[2] 2-sided carpet tape
[3] plastic rivets (like in cars)
[4] screws and fender washers

I would be interested in hearing opinions and other ideas. Note that I am using the very light "replacement" carpeting from Wal-Mart Aviation Supply, and I expect that it will need replacing every few years.

Thanks,

I found that the glue on the velcro got soft in the heat of the summer and would not secure the carpet when moving thins about in the summer. I ended up using carpet tape and it cure the movement issue.

Hi Andrew,
I used spray contact cement. It's wise to only put it on spots, edges
and corners if you feel it will be short lived carpet. I haven't seen
any degradation in my cheap carpet in 4 years and doubt it will ever
need replacement.
Good idea to put an aluminum hold-down strip with screws on the carpet's
front exposed edge.

This is true the glue on all the Velcro I've ever used didn't last. But I love Velcro so I suggest you get Velcro with NO glue and then use some quality glue to attach it.

make half inch thick block of plywood, and place then in key spots, then from the outside, screw them fixed, then place your velco to attached the panel, or tap screw.

I have used velcro with glue which holds it in place while I rivet it for permanent hold. On the fabric side, I suggest sewing it on. An upholstery shop can do that if you can't do it yourself.

I'm thinking something else. I had one pick up truck bed Rhino Lined and another Line-Exed. I have to put a sheet of plywood in if I want to slide anything in or out. Its non skid and lasts forever. Good color choices. I'm also looking at wing walks too.

I live in the desert and my experience has been that stick on Velcro only sticks for a while. The only way I've found to keep in on is to pop rivet it with big head rivets. Even the good brand 3M came loose after awhile. My entire baggage compartment and passenger area on my 701 is lined with auto trunk carpet that is applied with 3M spray or Weldwood brush on contact cement. Two years in the desert heat (110+ degrees) and sticking well. If you brush the Weldwood on one side, press it to mating surface and pull it back a bit, enough wet cement will transfer to the mating surface to form a bond. Keep it away from the mating surface and let it dry for ten to fifteen minutes. Go back and then press it firmly in place. You will have a permanent job that is quick and easy.

Hi Bob,

My only question is how much will that coating weigh. It may use up your baggage allowance and give you difficulties with weight & balance if it is too heavy. That wouldn't be an issue in a truck bed.

Do you spray this on, or brush it on? How many cans do you think it would take to do the baggage area? How about the wing walks?

How heavy is the can? (trying to get a feel for how heavy the rhino stuff is, knowing that the final dried-on product will be lighter than the full can that it came from when it was wet).

Sounds like it might be a good idea. Anybody tried something like this?

Thanks,

- Pat

I used AUTO TRUNK carpet, not not truck box liner. That would be very heavy for an airplane.
The trunk carpet I got from Pep Boys and or Checker Auto,it is extremely light. The adhesive doesn't amount to a hill of beans for weight.

I (hand) sew one side of the velcro to the carpet and put a rivet in each end or the velcro in the aluminum. Has worked fine.
