I chose the 601XL carefully. I plan to use it for cross country travel, Young Eagles and my grand kids want to learn to fly in it. I have plans 5936 and reserved N111DZ. I first learned of some 601XL accidents on this list. I accept that they will happen. I stripped out fuel and weather related causes from the data. I see that some happened in cruise flight and have not yet been explained. This is the reason that I have paused my project. The lively discussions here have given me new insight and caused me to do a lot of reading. I had expected the FAA to issue an AD by now or for Zenith to make some finding. I got the March letter on elevator stops.
I will be having coffee next week with a friend of a friend who is an aerospace engineer. I will bring the plans, photos and NTSB reports. I am not without ideas of my own here. I will discuss three simple upgrades to my project. I had four ideas, but I determined that number four won't help much. My ideas are simple established aeronautical practices that date back to the 1930s. Last week I took a picture of one of those ideas at an air show. It was on a USAF A-10 fighter. I am purposely vague because this forum is getting cut throat and no longer fertile ground. Anyone may contact me off list for details. You may also delete this post now if you are hurt.
This is the second builders group that I have been a member of. In the 1960s we communicated by newsletter. In 1968, there were a couple of fatalities caused by in flight structural failure. Even the designer was sued by an electric company because the accident plane cut a power line. In November, 68, another in-flight failure happened. This time the pilot landed safely. That airframe was examined by the designer. We builders received new drawings with the changes and they are dated Feb 28, 1969. Three months. Contact me for details. That design has since been dependable and safe for four decades now. If you wish, call this "A tale of two builders groups" with apologies to Dickens.
I have been flying since 1956 with experience in personal, military and commercial aviation. I survived two in flight structural failures over the years. My Karma is not strong enough for a third. I may be contacted for details. This is the main reason that I think that any censorship is a bad thing. Answers must be found.
Thanks to the builders on this list, I expect to resume "tin knocking" soon. I am a strong supporter of the design.
