I cannot go with the long ones. No panel space. I need the smaller profile, like Becker sells but everything is over a grand. I didn't realize they were so expensive. Can anyone help with the price......Thanks Geoff

Check out E-Bay. Add a e-mail alert for which ever models you are interested in. There have been some very good deals on non Mode S Xponders out of Europe since they have started requiring Mode S over there.

OK that settles it. I'll pass on the Transponder. I'm not interested in IFR anyway. As long as I have a radio I can enter D class without one and C class with permission (and follow explicit ATC directions). I have no wish to enter A class at all

It is more than just class C. It is the 30 nm radius mode C "veil". In my
case the edge of the Salt Lake City veil passes right through my home
airport. A reasonable summary of the regs can be read here:

20Transponder%20Operations%20in%20Class%20D%20Airspace%20in%20a%20Mode%20C%2

Airports that I frequent are inside the vail....
If you fly outside the vail yet above 10K, transponder is required.
Sport pilots dont need to worry unless inside the magical vail....

I would not skip the transponder because I enjoy flight following on cross countrys. Also if you are in an area like mine, the military aircraft have a better chance in seeing you. It is worth the investment.

But the FAA proposed sport pilot rule change may modify the "above 10,000
ft" limit to be "above 10,000 ft or 2000 ft agl". Given where I live if this
change goes through I will commonly be a sport pilot flying above 10,000 ft
msl.

Last word on the subject

It's back in. I gotta put the money out. Thanks for the advice. While waiting for responses I also queried EAA. Joe Norris wrote...
" Short answer: Yes, you’ll need one.
Longer answer: If your aircraft has an engine driven electrical system you are required to have a altitude reporting transponder anytime you are within the Mode C veil, even if you don’t plan to enter the class B airspace itself. "
Pretty cut and dried. Hope this helped other listers too....Geoff
