My wife loved flying today and has been up a couple of times when my instructor was with us. We had to cut our flight short today when she started complaining about the squeezing of the headset. She says it creates a pressure below her ears and says it hurts a lot. She actually took the headset off until we were on the ground. She just went through the police academy and the headsets they used at the firing range did the same thing to her.
Has anyone else had this problem and can they recommend a headset that might work with her. I am really going to have to do some research before I buy one. I would hate to buy one and have her hate it. She really enjoys flying and tried very hard to keep it on.

Thanks,

Gel inserts. Most headsets have that "option". David Clarks are much better on the ears with them...

That is what we tried today. The FBO has a DC set with Gels.  I though they were awesome, but she said it still hurt. I sure liked them though!!!!

The DC headsets do clamp pretty hard. Try a set of LightSpeed. If those don't do it try Bose or get a new wife. Which ever is cheaper. Smile

You might try in-the-ear headsets. But no ANR and not particularly cheap.
These were reviewed in Aviation Consumer in August 2006:

LIGHTSPEED WWW.ANRHEADSETS.COM 800_332_2421
MACH 1 $550

QUIET TECHNOLOGIES WWW.QUIETTECHNOLOGIES.COM 866_784_3883
AURICOMM 2.5 $385
AURICOMM HALO $340
AURICOMM YPOD $289

ALOFT TECHNOLOGIES _WWW.CLARITYALOFT.COM 612_747_3197_
CLARITY ALOFT $525

PANTHER ELECTRONICS _WWW.PANTHERELECTRONICS.COM 877_957_1600_
PANTHER CAT BLUETOOTH $649

I use Clarity Aloft.  No clamping pressure at all because it just has ear buds.  You can forget you have it on.  There is another, some what cheaper brand that works the same way, but I don't know the name of it.  The Clarity Aloft seems to get consistently positive reviews.  The foam pieces that actually seal the ear canal are replaceable and come in three sizes.  Music jack, but cell phone jack.

Well, I was looking at some of the in ear or right on the ear headsets. Do they block out the noise enough?

Actually really well. The ear piece is very similar to a "marshmallow" ear plug like you get at Home Depot. I had a Peltor ANR headset and like these much better

Larry,
You're wife would like the Clarity Aloft set as it sets over the ears
and has a set of ear plugs that protect and convey very well.
I've a set that my wife uses and she's very comfortable with them.
Extremely light!

Hi Larry,

There is simple but expensive solution to the clamping pressure
of headsets: the Bose headset. The cost is almost $1000/headset,
but it is very light, does not clamp at all, and noise attenuation is
terrific. It actually is quieter than the cabin of commercial jets.

Some years ago I made that expensive decision and have not
regretted it ever. I would say that it has doubled the enjoyment
of flying. I often fly 7 or even 9 hours in one day, and the Bose
set is just as comfortable at the end of such a long day as it
was for the initial takeoff.

Mind you, there may be now other headsets that deliver similar
performance at lower cost. I do not know. What I do know is
that Bose's performance, warranty service, etc., is impeccable.

Happy flying,

Klaus

It is also possible to assemble your own in-the-ear headset. Have a look at http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t 289 for ideas. I have a pair partially completed now using Sony headphones (MDR-EX71, about $35) and the matching Comply foam tips (the same ones that Clarity Aloft uses). Once I can scrounge up an old headset for the microphone I'll be able to finish it up.
