I am trying to install my firewall which includes drilling the holes for the
upper and lower engine mounting bolts.
the contruction manual calls for 5/16" holes but the bolts that were
provided by ZAC are actually 3/8"
Additionally the manual shows the mounting bolts welded to the mounts but
mine are loose.
Has anybody else found this to be true? Would I be OK to go the larger bolts
without untoward problems>???

Zenith has changed the mounts at least three times. In the last two
incarnations (integrated canopy pivot, triangular "BRS" mount) the bolts
have been separate so you can select the right bolts for a plate mount
(Jabiru) or a mount with spools (Corvair and others). If your mount will
have spools you will need to choose the bolt diameter that matches the
spools. What engine mount do you have?

Brad,
My drawings (08/05) show 3/8" bolts and 3/8" holes.
I installed the bolts that came with the kit. When I decided to go with a Corvair engine, I discovered that the engine mount calls for much longer bolts. If the original ones had been welded in place, I would have been a world of hurt. I think they welded the bolts in place on the prototype for fear that they would be too hard to hold when torquing the nuts. They are hard, but not impossible to hold. Been there, done that.
Some say to hold off drilling the holes until you have your mount. I drilled them where the drawings show and they worked out just fine.

Hi Brad,
I had a similar problem on my XL. It seems the fittings for the
longerons to firewall to engine mount had been changed from the time
my prints were done until the time I ordered the fuselage kit. The
change impacts not only the firewall attachment but also the hinge
for the canopy rail.
I didn't check with ZAC, but I am confident the larger bolts will be
just fine for the engine mount attachment. I figured out how to
drill the holes myself and even added a shim or two under the side of
the bolt head so I could tighten the nut from the engine compartment
side without holding the bolt head steady. I enlarged the holes to
final size after the longerons were in position against the firewall.
Good luck,
Paul
