|
|
The current discussions on flying qualities have been great and very informative.
Since we're on the subject, are there any opinions about how the 701 behaves in turbulence? Do the same characteristics already mentioned (light weight/inertia/control sensitivity/etc) make for a bumpy ride in turbulence? My nearest comparison and most experience is in the C152 and I wonder how the two compare.
Thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks

Hi, I spent the previous 600 hrs flying a C150a and would say the ride in turbulence is similar, allowing for scale of difference in weight and stall speeds.
I would not attempt or enjoy operating the 701 in the exact same conditions of wind that the heavier aircraft are OK in, and there were many days when the Cessna was too small for the conditions prevailing. Both being high wing aircraft, the degree of difficulty taxying is a good indication of whether its better to stay in the hangar. Usually enjoy the flight better in sunny calm days, anyway.

For the size and weight the 701 is amazingly good in turbulence. Certainly not a 172, but far better then a Kolb or other large winged lightly loaded ultralight type airplane. Surprisingly easy to land in a cross wind too. When you get on the ground though the cross wind will want to skid you sideways pretty easily if it is strong. Keep the upwind wing down with the flaperons.

This weekend I took my 701 up in 20 mph winds and on crosswind landing I

let it drift me sideways. I definetly need to work on that.
