Everyone,
Has anyone been able to source Araldite 420 and Araldite 2102 (rapid epoxy) in the US or Canada? If you have, can you forward me their contact information.
The stuff from my partially completed kit that I have purchased has expired. The stuff I believe is classified as hazardous material for shipping and I'm in Canada so I'll need to find out if the vendor can ship it here too.
OR
Is there an "approved" alternative that can be used that is readily available in US or Canada?
Thanks,
Roger Lowe

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Roger, and other Europa Builders in need of Redux also known as Araldite 420 or Epibond 420 A/B.
I order Redux in cases direct through my long time distributor TAPE. As there is no other acceptable substitute for Redux, for the Europa and as a result I am still buying it in bulk and shipping it. I have looked for substitutes, and many epoxies are as strong, but none as ductile or willing to be used in aircraft.
I have been informed by my US distributor of Epibond 420 A/B (Redux) that the manufacturer, Huntsman Products in California, has restructured their pricing and packaging. I have been in contact with my distributor and Huntsman over the last four months trying to resolve the issue. Gladly, Huntsman has at least changed their policy and have agreed to distribute Epibond 420 in 6 quart cases again. Unfortunately, Huntsman has nearly doubled the price per case with no significant bulk discounts available for multiple cases. I've researched importing fresh Redux from overseas and it is slightly more costly due to the weak dollar and high shipping/hazardous fees.
If I order soon, and I can still combine with other distributors I can get 6 quarts for about $280 a quart plus shipping to you (typically $20). Yes, I know that is $120 more than last year. Airbus is the primary user so if anyone knows someone at Airbus that can steal you some and smuggle it into the states, we are stuck with some pretty ugly prices.
Delivery is 30-45 days to me so it will all be a fresh batch. Shelf life is a year opened or unopened but usually good for at least two if unopened.
I have tentative orders for 2-3 quarts so far. I need three others.

Once open a year. The Huntsman product paperwork I have says 1 year, but I use it up to 3 if closed and stored properly. The problem is with the hardener. It makes a slime top if not properly stored, even unopened.
We are held hostage by Huntsman over here.
Woe are we.

I and others have mentioned this before on this site about expiration dates on the Redux. Alot of that is due to how long they want to keep records and liability. If you are concerned about the suitability of the material concerning its expriation date make a test coupon. Make a lap sample of the thickness or number of plies of fiberglass etc that you are anticipating to bond in service and do a destructive test. If the fibereglass breaks or tears before the bond separates you can reasonably be assured your material is still good.

Yes i did that with mine, but the joints i did all came apart by hand. Dont know but i think that qualifies as a FAIL
I just use it for fixing bits around the house now, plenty for that

That's exactly what I did, Steve, and the material gave way, before the
Redux did. My Redux was about 5 years old, when tested. Baby Blue
shows no signs of weak joints in 400 hours and she was built with this
glue...

I could be wrong, but did you not speak of using another type of adhesive
to stick together your Europa? Perhaps it was only the wing panels or fuse
halves? I think you also mentioned that you reinforced either the wing
panels and or fuse seams with perhaps 2 BID?
Perhaps it was Aeropoxy structural adhesive??

I have been using the A420 I got with the kit in about 1966 and believe the conponents are long lasting - but now that you have spoken I will run at test before next use.

Wow, that was quite awhile ago. It sure WOULD have to be long lasting. I believe that was one year before I was born, or before we landed on the moon. I wouldn’t want to date my age and say its OLD per se, but might be too old for Europa work J

I have a batch of Redux with an expiry date 1998 (so about 12 yrs old).
Not sure why I keep it but do test samples from time to time and apart from the emerald green now being more of a grey green it sets as hard as ever. The mix goes off just fine with no sticky residue. Using a hammer to separate the bond always ends up with the components breaking rather than the Redux.
Probably OK as a general adhesive but wouldnt risk it on anything structural.
If you had an out of date batch and only needed a couple of small jobs needing Redux it might be worth speaking with Europa. On the non structural bonds (eg: bedding in bolt heads) flox/ resin is often an acceptable substitute but check with Europa first.
Its a pity the factory cant supply smaller quantities for repair purposes. Maybe something the Europa club would be willing to look at. It would be possible to split a 2kg tin into 200 or 500 g batches.
Just a thought.

I just checked and the packs are 1.4kg, not 2kg as I believed.
In the UK these are available for £80 including tax and shipping. Split into 200g batches would work out at £12 each plus postage.
OK, I know that posting is a no no due to them being classed as hazardous chemicals but small batches properly packaged shouldnt be a problem.

Ron,
You have an excellent memory. When my Redux played out, I finished the
job (wings) with Aeropoxy 6228, mixed with a little flox, then
reinforced with a couple of layers of bid, as I did on the fuse joint,
which was a Redux joint. Absolutely no problems with any of the joints.
The point I was getting to was that, in all joints, using out of date
Redux, there have been no problems. I believe the expiry, to a point,
is a lawyer thing...
Sorry for any confusion...

In most countries a quantity of that size would probably fall into an exemption packing group
the same as most hair care products, a lot of which are corrosive or oxidizing agents also, but arent
considered hazardous because of the small amounts involved

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Craig,
All my epoxy is freshly made. Huntsman will not make a shipment unless it is all fresh. From the manufacturer supplied product data sheets, Araldite 420 is three years using the unopened containers supplied. Epibond, which is in metal cans, has only been tested to one year for storage and that is what the data sheet says from Huntsman. Maybe your containers are different down under. Yes the metal cans lasts longer just like the Araldite, but I have to go by the product data sheet supplied. It is the container of the hardener that makes the difference from what I see. Once opened, it is hard to get a good seal on the cans. I transfer my hardener to a small neck glass bottle with a tight metal cap and have no problems. It doesn't even get a scum layer. The resin is never a problem.
I am working with Europa about a substitute of Hysol 9309.3NA. Don’t look for a huge price difference though.
Bud
