Hello All,

The June issue of the "Arion Hangar Talk", better known as the Lightning newsletter, has been sent to Pete at Lightning and Jim Langley for posting on those two web sites. For the Lightning site, go to:
http://www.flylightning.net/
and for Jim's site, go to:
www.jimslightning.com
The feature article is about Earl Ferguson's world record flight. After reading about his adventure hopefully others will want to do the same thing and get some more world records for the Lightning.
As always, any and all feedback (both good and bad) is encouraged. It's how I know if I am on target with the newsletter. I am also asking all of you to submit articles, photos, or just about anything that might be interesting to a diverse group of airplane enthusiasts.
TIA,
Buz

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the good words. I am assuming you got the latest issue #5 from the Lightning list. There in lies my problem. When I go to there site to make sure the latest issue is uploaded, it does not appear to me that it is there, but I know it is. When I select newsletters the list I see only goes to #4. As everyone knows, I am a computer challenged person. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what I need to do. I have already downloaded the newest Adobe program and that did not help.
Thanks in advance,
Buz

Hi Buz,
I actually went to the Arion site, and read the newsletter there.....
I did not see it on the "List site", or on "Jims site" that night when you sent out the email about the June issue being out.
Hmm.....

Buz,
As always nice work! I had heard about Earl's world record and thought it was just some "hangar talk"; now I know better. It really gives me some re-assurance that if he can do it, I can...I think I'm getting close.

It's too quiet on here. Buz, I particularly liked the section under other items in the last two newsletters. Some of these things are worthy to be written up in things like AOPA and EAA magazines, other than it being aircraft specific. Folks, figure out the way that you feel most comfortable doing certain things for yourself, but Buz, if you don't know, has been there and done that. Nick is a younger guy, but has a lot of flying experience and has more time in a Lightning than anyone else alive.  (also flown more different serial numbers) So to me, these two articles that are kind of "how to" are things that are worth their weight in gold. Look at who they're coming from and what they're about. I truely hope that all of you have read these articles. Switching between different aircraft is the one thing that I've seen that can even the playing field quickly. The one thing that I've seen that holds true is that a person that switches to new aircraft type often and does so with safety in mind will find it easier to transition. If you ever get too old to learn though and if you've got enough types under your belt to fly anything, then you'll mess up. Learn these lessons that are written about in these articles and keep yourself humble and the transition to the Lightning will be enjoyable. More than that though, the lessons on decision making can apply to all types of aircraft and flying. Keep on flying! Brian W.

Hi Brain,
Thanks for the kind words on the newsletters.  Those bits of encouragement from our readers are what make me stay up late into the night working on the next issue to try to provide an interesting, informative, and entertaining newsletter. Sometimes the ideas and words flow as quickly as jet fuel through an F-4's J-79 in full afterburner, but at other times, I can't seem to think of a thing to say.  That is when inputs from our Lightning flyers, builders, and newsletter readers are so important.
And yes, it has been too quiet on the list recently. My guess is that most of us are still in shock after hearing about the tragic loss of our good friend and fellow Lightning enthusiast, Jerry Van Heeswyk. Most of us that have been in aviation for any time at all have probably been through this type of sad event before. It is sometimes hard to understand the "why", but we can often take comfort in the fact that as we continue enjoying our common love of the "Lightning" and sharing information about it, we are doing exactly what Jerry would want us to do.
Having said that, lets keep the flow of information "turned on". Lightning flyers, builders, and all on the list, all of you have something to share with the rest of the group, so send an email to the list or directly to me for the newsletter. Your information, and your willingness to share it, is what makes the newsletter informative and interesting.
As to an update on the Arizona accident, I am sure that Arion will soon be able to provide some information and facts. However, remember that the NTSB and FAA are responsible for the investigation and their final report will take some time to complete. Until then, any speculation as to "what and how" would not be in the best interest of all involved.
Blue skies and "nunc est bibendum."

Hi Allan,
It is hard to respond with a definitive answer without knowing more facts. For example, what do you mean by a "little fuel" on the ground and how long had the puddle been there? Aviation fuel evaporates pretty quickly so unless it was a really large leak and large puddle, it probably would evaporate on the ground really quickly and you would not see a puddle unless it was recent. Did you see any dripping? Were there any blue residue on the bottom of the wing? Had the airplane just been refueled and the line guy possibly over filled the tank and that is what caused the fuel on the ground? That seems to happen a lot with the Esqual and Lightning when untrained line guys refuel them. Was there an apparent area where the fuel was coming from? For example the tank sump. Was it in fact fuel? Sorry about so many questions, but without more to go on it is hard to come up with suggestions.
